Which breed/colour of cat are best hunters?

Mine is a tabby white moggy. Excellent hunter, recently upped her game to rats!

previous half Siamese half moggy good hunter but preferred mice and frogs, scared of rats.

Half oriental white cat and sister black with white bits. Ferocious duo, apart from rats. One fell into the pond once as she was trying to catch fish and got tangled up in the net. Wood pigeons, mice, nothing was sacred. Had a white brother next door who was part of their hunting gang I suspect…

Tabby childhood cat, Tigger, not that big but ferocious rat hunter dead and alive, caught them daily much to the disgust of my mum. Once bitten by one, only time at vet, lived to 17/18 with no boosters.

I mean basically he could’ve been an executioner in the Middle Ages 🤣. Feel sorry for bunny tho

Me too, we are pretty good at a animal anatomy these days.

I have a female tortie and white and unless something crawled into her mouth, she wouldn't know where to start with hunting.

We've had her a decade and the only exception to this is when she brought a pigeon home. A live pigeon. She and the pigeon sat in the kitchen together for quite some time until I opened the door and they both waddled out. If DH hadn't witnessed it, I'd have assumed I was hallucinating.

Neighbour's all white cat was a prolific hunter. He used to go to the local brook and bring back rats daily. Some were so big they would drag on the floor as he brought them back. He appeared to rule the local houses as other cats stayed well out of sight when he was about. Neighbour warned me not to stroke him even when it appeared that was what he wanted as he wasn't averse to a bite or a swipe if the mood took him.

White cats are I can contest brilliant hunters! Mine and NDN’s were - that one was a huge white male called Pookie Snowball. He used to bully his white brother mine, Snowy but he tried to bully his sister Sooty once (b&w) and she hissed at him and he was cowed! 🤣. No idea what he caught.

My tiny tortie girl is the same! She specializes in any /every sort of rodent, plus snakes (alive or dead).
I had a tabby boy who was brilliant at hunting... underwear! I had whole bags of thankfully freshly washed socks, knickers and bras, along with the occasional glove...

Which snakes? Grass or adders? Remind her that adders are a protected species… I heard that cats hiss as they’re copying snakes… 🐍 how that works dunno.

Big fluffy female moggy bought home squirrels, pheasants and once a chicken as well as rabbits.
My city dwelling female 1/4 bengal was an the absolute queen or moussing and ratting, she’d line them up on the bathroom floor for me.

Not a clue about the breed of snake.. they all looked dead, only when I chucked them in the stream we live beside did they spring back to life and swim off...

I don't think she'd care too much about them being endangered, judging by how many of the protected water voles she brings home. (In fairness, they're generally alive and also get taken back to the stream)

Lions are good hunters.

My childhood tabby would leave them dead in the lean to or just outside. Would eat rat but leave paws and sometimes tail lined up in a neat row or pile.

just round the corner from mum’s house was a council dump, then we had an alleyway behind the house where rubbish was collected, not anymore, and some wasteland behind the house. So there were prolific rats, until dump got turned into council houses and residents agreed not to leave rubbish in alleyway.

Cat (tigger) brought in 2 alive though, gas fire, gas man had to come out and in disused tumble drier, never found Rat!

All big cats are good hunters. Cats never fail to remind us they’re descended from cats in Egypt (so to be worshipped) or bigger wild cats. I wonder what’s the best hunter out of the big cats though?

My mum tried to save a field mouse from her cat once and mouse promptly bit her hard, she had to go to A&E for an updated tetanus jab.

I've been bitten by a rescued mouse before (surprisingly painful).
Ungrateful little sod. 🐀

That’s what my mum said! Last time she rescued one! I’ve only ever had hamster bites before and it sounds comparable pain to that…

Most of my cats, regardless of colour or breed (or no breed at all), have been effective hunters unfortunately - it's the one thing I don't like about cats. The best by far, however was a little female Ragdoll who was constantly struggling through the cat flap with prey, not just small mammals and birds but also pigeons, large rats and grass snakes. Her brother, who was twice her size, wasn't interested at all - far too laid back. Even when she presented him with live mice, he couldn't be bothered to rouse himself. Open a tin of tuna though and he'd smell it from two floors up and be in the kitchen begging in seconds!

We have a black and white and a tabby, both male from the same litter. The tabby is by far the better hunter but I doubt it has anything to do with his markings. The black and white was very obviously the runt of the litter- he’s just not quite right and probably doesn’t realise he is a cat and should do catly things. He’s extremely lazy and ridiculously affectionate- just a great big fluffy pudding to whom it would not occur to try to chase/catch/eat a small creature.

Do they go outside together? Obvs not hunt together.

Not often @Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain. The black and white doesn’t go out much at all as he is very lazy, but if he does, rarely ventures further than the end of the driveway whereas the tabby has form for going awol much longer distances - sometimes for weeks or even months at a time!

Although I have just recalled a time when they were both very young and even the black and white had a bit of energy in those days. One day we found the pair of them trying to lure a toad into the house via the cat flap. The whole scene was very Chuckle Brothers… ‘to me, to you…’ (I don’t think either of them wanted to actually touch it 😂)

BillieWiper · 07/04/2026 15:25

I'd think tabby or black as they blend in more. But apparently that's not necessarily true. I do think it depends on the individual cat.

My tabby is better at actually killing the prey, my white one catches it but isn't harsh enough so often it escapes, injured. Which i think is kind of worse fir the poor little creature.

cupfinalchaos · 07/04/2026 15:29

I have two Ocicats. One is a hunter, one isn’t. The hunter isn’t fussy, anything that half moves is game. Chasing a butterfly at the moment in the garden.

Apparently frogs and toads don’t taste very nice. I don’t know about toads but frogs can scream. Lovely hearing that in the kitchen suddenly and thinking wtf?! And then seeing frog with cat

My old cat Sooty used to love chasing dragonflies by the pond.
