Do I need to seek help?

Hi everyone,

Looking for a bit of advice please as I don't know if I am overthinking or if I need to take action.

I cooked lamb yesterday with garlic, pepper, salt and oregano seasoning then left the tray of fat on the side to set before putting in the bin. I forgot about it and it was left overnight.

I came down this morning and have seen bits of the fat layer missing, so the cat has been helping herself to it overnight!

I'm worried the garlic and salt that the fat would have been infused with is going to be harmful to her, she seems fine in herself and has been playing, is alert, no unusual meowing or anything, but she is drinking a lot more than I have every seen her drink.

Do I need to be concerned and contact someone or just keep an eye out for now?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

I found some information, but if unsure, ring the vet for advice.

@UnsocialButterflyy thankyou, I have found similar info, but it's the fact that she has eaten fat infused with it rather than an actual piece of garlic so I'm not not sure if she would have had enough to cause an issue.

I'm just trying to avoid a hefty vet bill, but of course will do so if needed

I would just keep an eye for the time being. Fingers crossed, she’ll be fine x

I wouldn’t panic unless cat shows signs of sickness to be honest. Mine are little shits who eat everything including chilli crisps.

My cat snaffled a keema nan bread. No ill effects x

Many of the pet insurance companies have a free online service where you can ask a vet for free advice.
Animal Friends does.

Check with your policy provider.

Other than that, you can ring your own vet for telephone advice. Mine does that for nothing.

Thank you all! She's a little bugger for food, if it's there she'll have it (which is why I'm so annoyed with myself for leaving it out) I guess it comes from her straying days. We adopted her 6 months ago and I'd hate for anything to happen to her, she's just the best and we're so close.

I'll keep an eye for now.

Here's the cat tax pic, also shows literally how close she likes to be 😂

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne that's good to know, we're actually with animal friends so I'll do that. Thank you!

Did you get an answer @Fortheloveofplants?

Fortheloveofplants · 05/04/2026 09:46

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne yes i did, thank you for your suggestion. I went straight into the app and spoke to a vet as you suggested.

They didn't think she would have eaten enough as it was just fat infused with garlic and salt rather than the actual garlic cloves. So I just need to keep a close eye for a couple of days and they've given me symptoms to look out for.

Meanwhile, she continues to scrounge for food!

I find the Animal Friends online vet service really useful. I've needed their help a few times with either my dog or one of my cats. Sometimes they've advised emergency care and contacted the out of hours vet to tell them I'm on my way. Sometimes they've advised watch and wait or a routine vet appointment at our surgery. Glad you got it sorted.

I'm so glad it was all right in the end!

Just don't be surprised if you get some yucky poops for a few days - too much fat is probably more dangerous than the little bit of garlic or onion ingested. It can cause pancreatitis but more likely a bit of a runny tummy.
