Delicious low-calorie biscuits for a large, fussy, foody cat?

Mogbiscuit · 31/03/2026 11:11

Dear Cleo, a large 7 year old British Shorthair, has a sore back and knee, and can't jump like she used to. The vet says she has a touch of arthritis and needs to take anti inflammatories and lose weight. She suggested getting some bulky but low calorie biscuits and gradually mixing them with the Royal Canon biscuits.
I am despondent because I have never got Cleo to eat anything prescribed by the vet or recommended by the breeder, including high-quality fresh food. She only wants the Royal Canin Shorthair biscuits, Applaws tuna in broth and salmon flavoured Licky-Lyx. Also butter, cheese and full-fat yoghurt.
Has anyone had any success finding some delicious low-calorie food?
Thanks

Middle school? Is that what they eat there?

Your post is in the middle school board. 😀 You may want to get it moved.
Beautiful, regal cat!

Beautiful cat, you need to ask MN to move your post to The Litter Tray as right now somehow it's in Middle School - goodness knows how you managed that ?

Thank you, I don't know how I did that. I was aiming for Pets or The Litter Tray. I've reported the thread and ask for it to be moved.

You could try adding salmon powder, our picky cat would eat anything with a sprinkle of that stuff. It’s meant to be good for their joints as well.

We get our cat food from Zooplus. They have a 'weight management' filter. One that our cats like is Smilla light and seeing as it has a picture of your cat on the bag, I'd take that as a sign.

Dry Cat Food ► ✔ Select from 1329 products.

We also get Purizon Adult Grain-Free Chicken with Fish. They like this very much and it also seems to fill them up - I carefully put out what it says is a portion (which looks like a tiny amount, like when humans eat cereal) and they eat it enthusiastically and even leave some, which I think means they're full.

They sell samples and small bags so you can try a few, find one she eats with gusto and then turns her nose up when you go back and buy the massive sack because the price per kilo is much cheaper.

Fabulous, thanks so much.
It is a shame that I have over 20K of their normal biscuits in the cupboard!

If she likes the Royal Canin Shorthair, maybe try the Royal Canin Light weight? That's worked wonders with both mine and DSis's cats.

Thank you. Didnt know they existed. I'll get some.
Cleo is currently staring at my cheese on toast. I told her that I shouldn't be eating it either but she is not convinced.

Have a good browse on Zooplus or even Pets at Home. There are plenty of brands with a light weight or weight maintenance recipe ranging from medium priced to very expensive.

Vets tend to recommend either Royal Canin or Hills; because a) most vets sell them and b) both do very large ranges including breed specific, various dietary recipes etc.

We also use purizon fish one, it's a very good food and might fill your cat up.

Any cat food we have as spare I take to the local fox or give to the local cat rescue. Or the other thing you could do is mix some in for a bit and get it used up.

Lindy2 · 06/04/2026 09:23

Royal Canin do a diet dry food. Perhaps start by mixing some in with her usual food and see if she can tell the difference. The different types of dry food are different shapes so you'll be able to see if she's eating around the healthy ones.

Perhaps stop the butter and cheese for now. Could she be tempted with a little bit of low fat cream cheese instead? My cat loves a bit of cream cheese as a treat.
