Collar or no collar?

Im going to start letting my cat outside soon, but collar or no collar? Just worried someone might take them or think it’s a stray even though theres no reason to think that as well taken care of but I constantly see posts on Facebook asking about missing cats even though they look well taken care of. So what do others do?

I tried with mine, and the vet measured it the first time I used one, but he was a Houdini at removing it. He got blood over his mouth whilst doing it, too.

Allergictoironing · 28/03/2026 13:49

Never a collar if it can be avoided. I'm sure others will come on here soon with horrific tales of cats who have got caught up on branches with them on, or who have caught their leg in them.

I know you can get the quick release type, but those which release easily enough to be safe are usually lost within a very short time..

Does anyone worry people will take their cat then? Maybe im being silly

No collar, ever, much too risky and no benefit to the cat.

Pabbel · 28/03/2026 13:57

No collar, they can be dangerous, my cat got her front paw stuck under it trying to pull it off!

If somebody wants to steal your cat, a collar won't stop them!

ILoveDaffodills · 28/03/2026 13:59

I'm no collar. As a PP said you can get quick release, but I was going through them (& the engraved tags) very very quickly. Bugger lugs was a climber, so not sure if he would have hurt himself (or worse) if they were not quick release?! But given
no one would have got close enough to him to read it, it seemed pointless anyway.

Girl cat wasn't a climber & didn't need hers replaced, but she never went far from home.

& neither looked like underfed stays!!

They're both enjoying long sunny days without collars now 🌈 & im missing them 😥

I won't have one at this house though as the road is lethal (well the fuck wits driving on it) & couldn't be doing with trying to keep a cat inside.

My 19 year old outside cat has never had a collar.

I have no idea why I thought that, just worried someone might think they don’t have home , probably all the “is this anyone’s missing cat” posts on Facebook showing a healthy well groomed cat sat on a wall 😩

@Takis No collar. But do microchip.
Mine are moggies and I do not worry about them being stolen. If they were champion pedigrees I probably wouldn't let them out.

Requests for advice from the litter tray require a mandatory cat tax. I'll check back later to see if you have paid it.

Microchipping is a legal requirement for cats now anyway.

So if someone catches your cat thinking it's a stray, the first thing a vet or rescue will do is check for that & contact you.

rainbowsparkle28 · 28/03/2026 15:34

Mine had a few collars but to be honest within a few minutes she would lose it and I just eventually didn’t re order another one 😂 She is microchipped so I gather god forbid if needed they would be able to scan her to find out and have my details.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/03/2026 15:52

No collar here, he’s chipped and is usually within shouting earshot.

Our last cat was a beautiful white girl who was pretty chonky, also chipped/no collar. We actually did have a new neighbour tell us about the “stray cat” who was always napping under one of their bushes and that they were going to catch and bring to the vet. You couldn’t have met a less likely looking stray, plus she was always kept in overnight (she just really, really liked that bush in the day) but I know what people mean about the social media posts when a cat is just having a stroll.

Takis · 28/03/2026 15:58

No just a moggy i think but he is beautiful tabby and white with heterochromia so he is pretty unusual looking but maybe im just being paranoid 🤣

No collar, they’re too risky on cats imo.

No one would want to steal my cat 🙈😂

Favouritefruits · 28/03/2026 19:28

I was always a no collar cat mum, but one of mine got lost so they now have a GPS and radio collar each which has a break release mechanism. Cat was eventually found!

Takis · 28/03/2026 20:50

Thanks all will skip the collar then
