Cat yowling so much!

We have an almost 15 year old cat. Ov r the last couple of years he has started yowling more and more. He does it through the night regularly and keeps us awake. He does it in the day when we are around. He seems physically fit. I have tried feliway - no difference. Any ideas?

Can be a sign of so many things - boredom, hunger, dementia just a few. It was one of the signs that led up to my 14 year old cat recently being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Does he otherwise appear healthy? When did he last get checked by a vet?

When my cat did this at about the same age, she had developed a thyroid problem. The thyroid glad was removed and she was fine for a while but then the same problem started again, and the vet told me that cats have two thyroid glands. After the second one was removed she was back to normal again for the next five years. She started to howl again when she got to 20 and we were told that it was probably dementia, but she still managed another two years of a reasonably happy life.

I was also going to ask about their thyroid. My elderly cat who has an overactive thyroid gland has been doing this recently so I’m wondering if her medication needs adjusting.

It can also be a sign of deafness.

Thanks. Possibly needs a vet check up then. Definitely not deaf! And otherwise very healthy looking. Fed on expensive Untamed food and biscuits available at all times. Not underweight, still likes being outside and killing things.

Our 15-year-old was like this but otherwise fit and sprightly. He recently had to have all his teeth out due severe peridontitis that we had no idea about. Since then there's been no yowling so it's possible that he was in chronic pain all that time despite seeming very well in himself 🙁

Poor toothless kitty. I will see if I can get old stoopid to the vet this week.

Aww bless him! Vet time.

FartyAnimal · 18/02/2026 11:07

He is generally happier when it's warmer as he can spend a lot of time outside.

My parents cat is like this. His bloods are fine and apart from arthritis, he’s healthy. I think he’s gone a bit deaf. 🤣 My friends elderly girls are just the same. Must be an age thing.

I was just about to start a thread on exactly the same thing. It's really starting to get to me, I'm so tired with the constant wake ups and he's so loud! He does have hyperthyroidism but it's under control with regular blood tests. The vet did give us some gabapentin to try but it made no difference. He seems otherwise happy but the yowling is a real problem.
