Vet has said they will send cat home with a cone. DD is worried that she will pull it off and wants to order something like this. Would welcome any thoughts or advice please.

None of mine have tolerated any collars. They were so freaked out by them that they were a risk to themselves. I tried a soft one with Penelope and she started mincing around like Hercule Poirot and apparently couldn’t go upstairs. She did tolerate it better than a cone though. She came home from her spay in a vest. But even the smallest size was way too big. And she was getting her legs stuck. She never touched her wound. So left it off.

My kitten is due to be spayed on Monday I have bought her a surgical suit to wear when recovering as her brother is also in being neutered and I didn’t want them both being in cones I think it will stress them both out but sadly I can’t put my boy in a suit.

FunkyMonks · 13/02/2026 07:21

This is also new for me as my other boy Loki when he was neutered 5 years ago he didn’t have a cone the vet said there wasn’t any need for it unless he was caught licking the area safe to say he healed up fine no issues.

Favouritefruits · 13/02/2026 14:18

My cats came home in the vests but I took them off and couldn’t get them back on. They didn’t bother with the stitches at all, they also didn’t bother listening to the vet as the played, raced and jumped around the house instead of resting and taking it easy!

The Stray was very upset with the vet cone. Couldn't eat or drink or go up/down stairs without falling down them. We bought a similar thing to your picture and while she still hated it at least she didn't fall down the stairs and could eat. Buy it.

My friend used a soft donut cat cone instead of a traditional plastic cone and it worked really well. Her cat used it as a pillow when she slept.

Awww love the photos!!
I'll buy it cos its only a few quid if she doesn't like it. I think it'll also reassure DD.

We had spay suits. Vet put them on while they were still unconscious.
One of them bit a hole in her spay suit within 2 days and had to go back to the vet to get a cone. She couldn’t get the cone off. (She was very unhappy about being in a cone though).
Other cat was fine in her suit. She pretended she couldn’t walk in it whenever I was watching but she could.

I had my two girls done at the same time. They hated the suits and the cone. I left them off and then got told off by the vet as they did lick their wounds so we had to persist with the cones for 10 days. It meant we had to keep putting them back on and we even lost a cone for a whileBlush. I had my male cat done on Friday and I’m hoping the cone can come off soon as he keeps dipping it in his pooConfused Its probably worth buying one of these so you have a third option x

Idratherbewithmycat · 16/02/2026 21:01

We had to get her a recovery suit instead of a cone as that was driving her absolutely insane. It was the best thing for her and she calmed down as soon as we switched her to that so personally it’s what I’ld recommend

I'm with a specialist neuter clinic. We spay thousands. We never send them home with cones.

I'm trying to imagine Penelope mincing around like Hercule Poirot now!

Both my kittens were done yesterday bless male kitten keeps getting his cone off and even managed to get it off in the litter tray and land in his poo 🤢 so had to clean that, got the soft cone coming today to see if that’s any better as vet said he has to wear this for 10 days, was funny when they were handing him and his sister back to us he had already taken the cone off and the vet said ohh he’s already gotten out of it.
His sister is wearing her surgical suit she did walk funny in it for a bit to begin with and kept getting her legs stuck by pulling them through the leg holes and then early hours this morning she had gotten out of her suit and was proudly laying on my daughters bed so I had to get that back on her.
This is going to be a hard 10 days keeping them both covered as we have an older 5 year old male cat so I’m making sure he’s not rough with them or licking their wounds although they are more rough playing with him 😂 male kitten has a already a few times licked his area 🙈.

My cat was spayed, I will admit it was very stressful. I chose the surgery suit option, but the first suit was a little big for her so she would wriggle her leg out and fall on the floor like a sausage. Another issue is she would wee on it. We had to pin it. I did try with the cone, but she did NOT like that. When I did take it off when it was time, she licked the wound when I took my eye off her for a minute and was doing her crazy racing and jumping around the house before the suit came off, so it came open a bit, so we rushed her back to the vet and sadly she had to be put back in the suit for a while (but one that fit her this time!) I will say her being on gabapentin and then antibiotics, made her sleepy which helped with her stress. Every cat is different though, so I think it’s hard to advise until it happens. I do recommend asking or buying the suit though (you can get them on amazon) and keeping her calm. Pics of my sweet Susie in her suit, sleepy from her meds!

My boy had a soft cone similar to the one in the photo because he HATED the plastic one, he was bashing into things all over the place and was clearly very upset by it. As we were dealing with a stress triggered bladder issue, it was not ideal!

We got him a soft one and he didn’t love it, but after a few days took took to using it like a pillow that he was very proud of 🙈. He was in it for a few weeks so we got two so we could wash one as he was terrible at eating in it! Just make sure it’s the right size as the first one we got was too small, either to fit round his neck or to prevent him accessing his wound- he’s over 6kg.

Seriously - just don't bother with cones or anything else. It's not necessary.
