Annoying cat!

we have a female cat aged approx 13 who was spayed many many years ago.

there is a cat who I don’t think is stray as it looks well cared for, and we have seen many times in the 3 years we’ve lived here who is all of a sudden sitting CONSTANTLY outside our front or back door just meowing at my house.

i don’t know where the owners live but it’s even there sometimes at night now and it’s waking me up.

how do I get it to go away and why won’t it leave us alone?! It never used to do this….

I had success with a sensor alarm that used bright lighting and the sound of barking dogs. You could try something similar as you might just need the bright lights for nighttime to scare it away. If you change the habit, it should only be a short term thing you’ll need to do.

My only worry is if I was use that during the day with the sound, my own cat will be scared of it… it’s driving me crazy

You can get those high pitch deterrents - most adults can’t hear it and they only go off if the sensor is triggered. Me next door neighbour used one to keep our cat off his (very precious) lawn and it seemed to work.

Is there a local pet alert page, I'd post it on there that you are concerned that he is lost and will take it to a shelter if nobody owns him.

If he has just appeared he might have been dumped.

sbdv · 12/02/2026 13:52

I don’t think it’s lost as it’s been kicking around the area for the whole time I’ve lived here. Only just the last few days has it been incessantly sat at my door

Could you post on Facebook look to see if you can an owner? If no one comes forward the poor cat might have been abandoned in which would explain the change in behaviour.
I’ll be honest, I’d have fed the cat and given it a bed for the night by now but I’m a big softy.

Agree
Pets reunited is good too
If he’s meowing outside your house there is something wrong

Take a picture and post

Agree

Poor cat, it might be lost, dumped, unwell, blind, have dementia. The weather has been awful, I'd take it to the vet for a scan unless there is someone local who does chip scanning.

Ilovelurchers · 12/02/2026 14:17

Maybe the owners have abandoned it, as others have suggested?

(My cat was dumped when her former owners moved out of the property they were renting - I believe it's not uncommon. In her case she was locked in the garage, poor mite - but I am sure most people just leave the cat outside.)

Take a photo and put it on your local Facebook explaining what is happening. If the owners are genuine and still around, they may be able to keep their cat indoors at night, so that she stops bothering you? Most decent people would intervene if their pet was causing a neighbour problems, I would think.

Sorry, somehow I didn't spot this.

Good luck. If nobody comes forward you may need to inform the RSPCA I guess?

99pwithaflake · 12/02/2026 14:20

Try and find the owner - it could be that they’re poorly or something and the cat has nobody to feed them.
