Reverse Sneezing?

purpleme12 · 11/02/2026 23:20

So I think what he's doing is reverse Sneezing
But he does it really often
He didn't used to do this.
I did describe it to the vet last time we saw him and he said it sounded like reverse Sneezing. Although since then he does it even more often.
Has anyone else had this??
I don't like it

Can someone please tell me if this means there's a problem

My dog does this. It sounds horrific but it’s harmless. It’s just dust in the throat or nose. You can stop is by massaging their throat or gently covering their nostrils.

I had to google reverse sneezing! It sounds like it’s a normal reaction to an irritant.

The advice is to consult a vet if the episodes are prolonged (more than a minute) or very frequent, to rule out infection, asthma, a foreign object etc.

My cat did this for the first time recently and several times since- always during the night. It is scary! I actually didn’t know what it was until I googled after seeing your post and it definitely is with her! I haven’t had her checked as getting her to a vet is another story but she seems fine the rest of the time. She’s 16.

Does anyone know what it could mean if it is a problem?

He's doing it really really often now

The advice I read was to video it and take cat back to the vet for tests. Hope kitty is okay x

purpleme12 · 13/02/2026 19:14

He's old and you can tell me he's old

Might have to take him to the vet

If he’s doing it a lot try to get a video just so they can make sure it is nothing harmful. It’ll be typical he won’t do it there. How old is he?

purpleme12 · 13/02/2026 19:20

He's just turned 17
He's got hyperthyroidism and kidney disease
And you can tell he's old

Oh bless him. Similar age to mine who’s just started doing it then. I’m sorry he’s unwell in other ways. If it’s any consolation, the first time my cat did it was early hours of the morning and I sat up the rest of the night sobbing thinking it was the end. Given his age and other conditions I would get him checked. Sending lots of hugs to you and strokes for your cat xx

I had a cat who did this is whole life from being a small kitten, he was healthy cat who lived until about 18 so didn’t cause any health concerns. I tried to explain it to several vets but they didn’t seem to know what I was talking about and just shrugged it off.

purpleme12 · 14/02/2026 07:30

He's slept on me like a scarf all night
Done it this morning

Can't help worrying now

I love him so much

I'm scared this means it's the end

Turned out to be a blade of grass for my friend they thought they were taking hom for the last trip to the vets prepared themselves etc then he gave a big sneeze she saw something green popping out and pulled it out blade of grass in the nasal cavity a course of antibiotics just in case and he lived another year or so (he was an old boy too)

COUNCAT14 · 14/02/2026 09:51

This is how I felt OP so I fully understand. My girl cat is a Velcro cat anyway but it’s hard sometimes to not differentiate between normal behaviours and worry. Remember it’s common for cats to hide when they’re unwell/dying so it sounds positive that your boy isn’t. As another poster said, it’s probably an irritation of some form x
