Changing litter advice

I have a cat with cystitis but he hasn’t had a flare in a good while. The litter I use tracks everywhere so I’m wanting to try another type
have added one handful to his usual litter and mixed it in and he’s currently refusing to use it Confused
he isn’t in a flare as he’s just walked once to the tray, looked in it and walked off like the dramatic cat he is
will he get used to it or am I doomed to litter tracking?!

I have a big plastic mat with ridges that goes in front of the litter tray that picks up the worst of the tracked litter. Also collects the wee on the occasions when DCat misses the tray.

I have one of those too but he is SO messy
he digs like he’s going to Australia, covers nothing and comes out with his litter on his head Confused

wide awake as I’m worrying he’s blocked and not weeing, while he snores away happily (the vet was “blocked cats do not snore, prance about happily or demand treats)

Wooden pellets

I got a free sample of some litter over. Can’t remember what it was, corn or tofu or something. I put a bit in to use it up. Madam refused point blank to use the tray until the offending litter had been removed 😂

When I change the type of litter I put a thin layer of the new litter underneath, then add a deeper layer of original litter on top. So it looks and feels the same when they dig the first time and they get on with it. Then I gradually increase the proportion of new to old litter.

I've never had a refusal. Maybe it depends on the types of litter? I often switch between Cats Best (wooden pellets) and the corn based type with no trouble. I also recently switched my oldest cat, he had always used Catsan but he digs to Australia and I got fed up with standing on thrown out Catsan! So I changed to Cats Best, I thought he might protest but he didn't, and last week I also switched him to a deep sided tray which has improved things even more.

He stomped off for a wee in the tray about 3am with a face of “what? Just didn’t NEED one” and happily used it
