Cat getting claws caught on everything

It sounds stupid and I've had cats all my life but never known anything like this. Most would occasionally catch a claw on something but with my 8 month old moggy it is constant. Pretty much every time she comes on my lap her claw catches on my clothes or the throw and then she is looking panic-stricken and jumping off, still attached - cue more panic. I try and unhook her but she's too panicky so I can't. I don't think she's let me trim them. Any ideas?

We have a groomer come round to trim the claws of ours. It’s a challenge but we all get through it. Previous cats never needed this, I guess these two have long nail genes

Lunde · 26/01/2026 21:09

How often do you clip them? Some cats need it every 4-6 weeks

Personally I feel it is cruel to cut cats claws,

How about something like these...

Good luck putting them on though!!!

Take her to the vet and get them to show how to trim them safely using special scissors. It’s not that hard especially the front paws. Back ones are trickier. I usually bundle my cat in a blanket and wedge her between me and arm rest on the sofa so no escape route. Takes about 2 minutes to trim the claws.

I think de-clawing is cruel but if they are too long and causing the cat stress, trimming them is fine. I only take the very ends off and they still have working claws !

Lararoft · 26/01/2026 21:15

The vet nurse will clip them to an appropriate level for you. My kitten needs her claws as she uses my home like an assault course but her claws got too sharp & she actually hurt herself when scratching, as well as me, so the nurse trimmed them but not too much.

AltitudeCheck · 26/01/2026 21:16

We trim our cats claws, one cat is super chill and we do them when he's snoozing on our lap, he just let's us. Other cat, we have to do a few at a time when she's not expecting it!

Lararoft · 26/01/2026 21:16

I would not be able to trim my kittens claws myself unfortunately she’s so feisty it’s a two person job!

coffeerevelsrule · 26/01/2026 21:17

Just counted up and this is the 12th cat I've lived with and none have needed clipping! Didn't even know it was a thing...

Does she get plenty of time outside? If not, then invest in several scratching posts and trays, and sprinkle them with catnip.

In the past I have trained cats to let me clip their claws. If they are sitting calmly on your lap, just get them used to having their paws stroked, and eventually you will be able to pick one paw up with your thumb on top and the side of your index finger underneath. Squeeze gently and the claws appear. Trim away to your heart's content.

One of ours has a particular claw that grows much faster than all the others, so maybe your cat is the same.

And I think it's cruel to put mittens on cats - much more cruel than just trimming their toe nails! Shorter nails = not quite as sharp for a couple of days until they sharpen them again vs getting caught in everything. Bulky mittens = not able to scratch at anything at all, less ability to play, even affecting their ability to move about.

It's not like we're talking about de-clawing (which is illegal in the UK), just trimming their nails. I used to use the same nail clippers on Boycat that I do in myself!

scottishthistle77 · 27/01/2026 06:39

I made a point of touching my 2 cats’ paws when they were kittens, rubbing the pads, gently pushing each toe to expose the nail, in between scritches behind their ears or under their chin. That has made it much easier to clip their nails and, while it’s not their favourite thing to get done, they both will sit and let me do it without having to hold them down. I did the same with my chihuahua and I use a grinder on her nails without any problem.

Although your cat isn’t a kitten, you could still try slowly getting it used to you touching its paws before introducing the nail clippers. If you’re not confident trying it yourself then ask your vet the next time you are there.
