My cat is 17, getting worried about vet check up

He's a gorgeous grumpy old boy, he purrs and drools when he's happy, pees in the corner when he's scared, throws up when he eats too quickly, eats and drinks OK most of the time, so it feels like he's going to go on forever.
I'm taking him for his 6 monthly check up later and having (stupidly) googled and found that a well looked after cat in the UK can live up to 17 years I'm getting worried.
Reassurances very welcome please!

I’ve had two that lives into their twenties and one at 18. When the time is right to say goodbye you know, and it doesn’t sound as though you’re there yet.

Thank you, that's definitely reassuring!

My old girl was 19 when she passed and my Dad had a cat who lived to 20 and this was back in the 70s.

My lovely black cat had to be PTS at the grand old age of 23! So there is hope for a few more years for your boy.
In her last couple of years she was deaf, and didn't go outside, but pottered around the house happily. She always knew where her litter tray was.
I knew when her time had come because she just looked so sad and hardly ate (except Lickelix!).The vet came to us straight away and she had a very peaceful end.

My boy is 17. Vet visit yesterday as he had got a wound from 'squabbling' over territory. He had a check over whilst he was there and clean bill of health apart from his battle scar. I get where you are coming from though, as I had a little niggle of doubt on the way there. Hope all goes well.

My childhood cat lived to be 21. We knew when she was at the end. It was sad but we knew she couldn't go on.

I currently have a 15 year old and a 16 year old. It does get worrying. My 16 year old male looks really healthy apart from his fur is thinning slightly around his ears. The 15 year old female is really showing her age now and we suspect she has dementia as she gets confused at night and yowls until we call her into the bedroom.

Thanks, glad to hear your boy is OK, they never grow up do they?! 😂

I've had a male who got to 19 and a female who lived to 23 - despite being the runt of the litter and always looking dinky and frail! When my cats get ancient I try to keep vet appointments down to a minimum to not stress them out and won't do anything too invasive as it's unfair IMO - obviously took them when necessary.

Well they’re not going to tell you to have him PTS just because he’s 17.

He's fine 🙂 thanks everyone!
