What food to use to help my cat take twice daily liquid medication

She's happy to take this with a tinned sardine in oil but these contain salt so need an alternative. What has worked for you?

DCat needs this medication long term so need to find something that's not going to harm her.

Tuna in spring water works with mine and DSis's

Greenier · 16/01/2026 07:35

Medication is Thyronorm

We were advised to try Lick e licks by the vet, and our extremely fussy cat complied, surprisingly! I think as UPF cat treats they're a little 'better' than things like the mousse dreamies, and way better than not getting the required dose. Good luck to you and your cat x.

Ive use lick-e-licks for meds before too

DoorDoorsDoors · 16/01/2026 07:51

Hi, thyronorm is meant to be administer directly into the mouth or without food. It’s honey flavoured. So if you must give it with food then the tiniest amount of lick-e-lick is best.
As an aside tuna in brine is salt!

dementedpixie · 16/01/2026 07:56

@DoorDoorsDoors tuna in spring water isn't brine.
You could also use some of the liquid from a cat soup @Greenier

Chaotica · 16/01/2026 08:01

We use a little cat milk. Works with our fussy cat.

Gabitule · 16/01/2026 08:02

Lick e lix or Sheba cat soup. Yum yum meow 😺
Cats love these so much that it makes me so tempted to try them too in case I’m missing something 😀

LeoTimmyamdVi · 16/01/2026 08:03

My boy cat is on Thyronorm 5mg twice a day. He is very food motivated so we just got in to a routine of me syringing it in to his mouth and then putting his plate of food down straight away. He will even run from wherever he is in the house when he hears me shake the bottle and stand ready to have it.

Somehow the makers have got a taste that cats really seem to like!

Good luck and hope you find a way that works for you and your cat 😊!

snowymarbles · 16/01/2026 08:16

My cat was on thyronorm. She loved it and as soon as she saw the syringe would come running!

DoorDoorsDoors · 16/01/2026 09:50

Sorry I misread spring water for brine! Forgive me!

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 16/01/2026 09:54

ITA, I would just syringe it in! I am lucky DCats were hand reared with a syringe of milk. They accept syringing quite happily! I know, because one of them burnt her tongue and had to be on IV fluids for a few days at the vets. Then, she came home with tins of like pate, I had mix with water until runny and then syringe feed her with it. No problem at all!

Be careful with tuna. I believe too much of it, can affect their kidneys due to the high protein content.

Very help - thanks all

We always popped tablets in a small cube of butter

Leafy2018 · 16/01/2026 22:18

We just fed our neighbours cat who needed liquid meds twice a day. We mixed it in a small bowl with half a pouch of those meat paste treats that you squeeze out (a bit like a frube for cats). It worked perfectly.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2026 22:24

Personally if it’s liquid she’d just get it in a syringe. My lot have never fallen for mixing any medication with food!

Oxo01 · 18/01/2026 15:56

Thyronorm is much more effective if syringed into the mouth.
My cat hated me doing it but I managed it twice a day.

Check the ingredients! I'm on a low salt diet and was shocked to discover that tuna in spring water has the same salt content as tuna I brine!! At Sainsburys anyway.

soupyspoon · 18/01/2026 16:24

Tuna in spring water every time

Then once you have drained out one tin, fill the same tin with the tuna still in it with water, for the next dose. Just keep it going for a couple of days so you get tunary water which is tasty for them

In brine 0.5g per 100g
In spring water <0.5g per 100g

So less in spring water

Sainsburys own tuna chunks

All comments appreciated but now find DDog will take it when put directly into his food. Am giving a relatively small amount of food to make sure he takes all the medication then topping up with dry food
