Cat proofing fence without mesh

I’ve noticed a lot of little birds have recently made their home in a large bush/tree at the edge of my neighbours’ garden. I want to protect them (the birds) from my delightful cat who is already showing considerable interest, sitting by the window overlooking the bush, and staring fixedly at it.

There is a fence between us, but the bush overhangs it & is taller than the fence. I can cut back the bush overhang in my garden, but think I also need to prevent the cat climbing that bit of fence to get into the bush in the garden next door.

All fence proofing methods though seem to involve mesh and I’m worried that itself might be bad for the birds! Has anyone discovered another method? Mesh free? I’m kind of vaguely wondering whether one possibility might be to fix a pipe towards the top of the fence on my side but have no idea if that would work……

You’d need to cat proof your whole garden and stop your cat going out the garden wouldn’t you? Otherwise he’d just go into your neighbours garden via another route? Or do you think he can’t get up the tree?

anyway your drainpipe idea is a workable one. There’s actually a cat proofing company which do a fence thing with wooden rollers, so the rollers roll and the cats can’t get over the fence. I imagine a drainpipe could do the same?

That is really interesting - thank you so much! The rollers look ideal.
