Our cat is 13 months old and was diagnosed with a grade 2 heart murmur as a kitten. We decided to watch and wait as he wasn’t showing any signs of being unwell. In the last 48 hours he has become very lethargic and slow. He isn’t eating much, is quite ‘starey’, and has periods of twitching his ears and licking his lips.

This morning I took him to the vets. As soon as he got there he perked up and was behaving pretty much like his normal self. The vet explained that this often happens due to an adrenaline rush. She said that his heart murmur has increased from a grade 2 to a grade 4, but couldn’t see any other issues with vital signs, though she couldn’t take his temperature as he was wriggling so much.
She has referred him to cardiology and we have an appointment on Tuesday.

She also said it could be epilepsy - the staring and twitching ears could indicate partial seizures.

Im really worried about him. Any experience of symptoms like these?

No experience of epilepsy, but I do if heart disease. My cat had HCM. She was medicated and did very well. You’d have never known she was so ill. She had nine months of living her best life until she suddenly became poorly as the diuretics she was on caused her kidneys to fail. The cardiologist will probably do an ultrasound scan of her heart and then go from there. My girls both used to lie still for their scans. I hope you’ve got good insurance as it’s very expensive!

That’s reassuring, thank you. We do have insurance but there was a short gap between the free insurance we got from the rescue centre running out and us getting a policy. I’ve got a horrible feeling that the heart murmur was first suspected then. So he may not be covered.
