Diabetic Cat.

Does anyone have any experience with a diabetic cat?

Our cat is almost 14 and recently been diagnosed with Diabetes. He is currently on two injections daily, 12 hours apart.

He's still currently urinating a lot, drinking quite a bit and just lays mostly sleeping on the chair all day.

Today, despite him having access to a clean litter tray, he urinated all over the rug by the front door.

Im finding it all really difficult to keep on top of. I have kids and a home to run and there’s cat litter all over the house, I’m constantly emptying the little tray.

Im not sure why I’m writing this but does anyone else have any advice or in a similar boat.

Just struggling a bit.

I have a newly diagnosed 21 year old cat. Since starting on the insulin a few weeks ago I’ve found her appetite has returned to near normal levels and she has put some weight back on but she’s still drinking excessively and the litter tray needs changing much more frequently. We have a large very shallow litter tray (it’s actually a gardeners plotting tray) as she was having trouble getting in and out of the old tray. The size of it has meant it’s lasts a couple of days.
I’m hoping that once the insulin has stabilised her (still high readings and not in range yet) she’ll be drinking less.

Please go on Feline Diabetes FB group, make a throwaway account if needed. Don’t want to give false hope but many cats can go into remission with the right diet.

I have a 10 year old boy who is diabetic. He also has arthritis and is on medication for gut problems. He has been diagnosed for over a year now and his blood sugar levels stay fairly steady. We feed him on a diabetic cat dry food twice a day with a diabetic cat wet food at lunch times along with a probiotic powder. He still drinks a lot and has fairly soft stools. The vet (a cat specialist practice) is very happy with him. He does tend to utinate either in the litter tray or the upstairs bath (the litter tray is in that bathroom) and occasionally on the front door mat. I have 2 mats which are washable for that reason. The weeding on the mat is worse when his arthritis injection is due (once a month) as he finds it harder to get upstairs in time.

As someone mentioned further up the thread there’s an FB group called Uk Feline Diabetes Support. They’re a really friendly helpful bunch. There’s cat food suggestions etc on there. I have had two cats who were diabetic. Both were injected twice a day, various blood tests to check up on them.
I’ve lost them both now but honestly worth joining for he support, info on hypos etc.
