To take cat for a second check up following dental/tooth extraction?

Boris had a dental on Thursday - X-ray, two teeth out and clean.

On check up two days later the vet said his gums looked red (they were more red than when he went in), so to continue with Metacam until it ran out and to get him checked if in doubt. During that conversation it came out my other cat has an appointment tomorrow, so vet said they'd happily give him a quick check if I wanted.

Would you get him checked again tomorrow? He's eating wet (and apparently eat dry which my DH stupidly gave to him yesterday while I was a work. The thing that puts me off is that he was physically shaking when I took him in for the dental and check up - that might have been as he's never been to vet without his brother, but don't want to put him through another appointment unless I have to.

Are you able to see his gums yourself? If he’s eating, acting normally, not pawing at his mouth I’d maybe not take him for another check-up. I know it’s tricky, I just went through this with my cat, I missed a 3 day post tooth extraction check-up (couldn’t get them in carrier). I didn’t want to bother but to be on the safe side took them on day 5. If I’d been able to see in her mouth it would have been easier to decide.

Yes, I would take him in.

Three or my cats have had dental extractions in the past few years and one of them got a bad infection afterwards (he seemed okay to me, he was still eating). The infection was noticed at a check up five days after the extraction and he had to have a fortnight of antibiotics.

I would. Mine got 2 checks up after a dental. One 3 days after and a week after that. He might be better with his brother there?

Just an update, Boris smashed through the cat flap (it's in four pieces!) while I was loading his brother, so hasn't been to the vet.

It's been left to continue with painkiller until it's gone, and if he's not happy in any way, drooling or has bad breath, to take him back.

Pen Has had to stay on metacam for an extended time both times she’s had a dental. The smell of infection is unmistakable though. And she had an infection with 48 hours of having hers out.

Thanks for the last comment. Luckily no bad breath. Should have enough Metacam for an extra three days if treatment originally suggested.

I'm keeping him off dry cat food a bit longer, which we much prefers. Luckily he's used to having wet

I’d just let him have dry, if he prefers it It was the first thing Pen ate, and she’d had all her teeth out! I don’t think she ever chewed it. If she was sick it looked the same as when it went in.
