Dcat is in vets for blocked urethra(2nd time, last time was about 4yrs ago). Urine was full of crystals so he's going to have start urinary food, I've seen the price(!) and am wondering what recommendations other people have

What food was he on before?

dementedpixie · 10/12/2025 20:12

Check out zooplus for various cat foods

Felix-he's a fussy bugger and refused most brands,it seemed the more expensive the less likely he was to eat it which is making me concerned that he won't eat the specialist food

Our cat had similar issues and we feed him on a mix of Royal Canin Veterinary Urinary wet food and dry pellets. Seems to do the trick.
We buy it online from Animed which we found significantly cheaper than elsewhere.

@ohreallyIsee did he eat dry and wet food?
My 2 are really fussy with wet food but less fussy with their dry food

Both my 10 year old cats who are brothers have had bladder stones leading to operations so my vet recommended Royal Canin Urinary S/O (apparently it's the S/O bit that is important if they have already had bladder stones as it helps prevent them forming). I buy a 7kg bag of dry food usually from Amazon which lasts them about 3 months and I have been able to claim some of the cost back from their Petplan insurance. They also have a vet recommended supplement daily called Cystaid which I buy monthly as they both have it and have also been able to claim some of the cost of this back. The food averages at approx £59 a time and the supplement at approx £16 a time for 30 capsules. Neither of them have had to go back to the vet since being on this diet so I assume it is doing what the vet said it would. I have no idea about other brands as this one has been working for them since diagnosis. There is a wet food version too but my cats prefer dry food (with lots of water!).

If he had the option he would eat just dry but we would give a sachet of food and put a few biscuits on top so the vast majority of his food is wet. He has been a bit stressed lately as dd2 who is his person has been away alot this last month. When she got home after the first trip she want for a walk the next night and he looked so worried when she put on her boots and coat and sat staring at the door til she came back.

The Purina urinary food is good and much cheaper than Hills or Royal Canin.
