My cat is now thirteen and a while ago became allergic to chicken as a lot of older cats do. He will lick himself raw if he eats it. I chose this product because it says it is for older cats and fish based. It has made him ill again. Guess how much fish is in it and how much chicken.

I guess three whole chickens but only one small fish.

dementedpixie · 09/12/2025 21:32

Try thrive dry fish version. Has 70% fish although might be a bit more expensive than Iams

dementedpixie · 09/12/2025 21:35

Applaws also has a fish version

workingtowards · 09/12/2025 21:41

I was just so shocked when I read the package. Iams Ocean Fish is just 4% fish. 96% something else.

And 24% chicken. How on earth are they allowed to promote it as a fish product?

We have Applaws fish which the cats like

Iams is rubbish.

Timeforabitofpeace · 09/12/2025 22:30

We buy science diet in a big sack, which works out ok. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than Iams, and not too pricey if bought in larger quantities at zoo plus.

dementedpixie · 09/12/2025 22:38

If its Hills Science plan then they arent much better than Iams. They don't even say how much meat they contain and have lots of fillers

RandomMess · 09/12/2025 22:59

Can they eat other meat, just not chicken? If so look at Eden and Katkin.

I did not know that. Is the main symptom excess licking?

Yes - about a year ago my cat started licking itself until it had raw bald patches, poor thing. Having eliminated other options like stress or fight wounds, the vet suggested removing chicken from his diet and it cleared right up. I was surprised, as I had never heard of it either, but the vet said it can be common in older cats.

I recommend Blink - I have a discount code if you wanted to try a box (PM me if so)

No nasty fillers/grains and very high meat content (and the meat that’s advertised on the packet too!) I’m at work at the moment but from memory it’s >90%

zurigo · 10/12/2025 08:03

As a fellow cat owner, I'd just like to say 'Thanks!' for the info in this post. I didn't know that older cats can become allergic to chicken or that a symptom is excessive licking!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 10/12/2025 08:28

I had no idea about chicken allergies in older cats. As the owner of an older cat who eats almost entirely a chickeny diet, I’ll keep my eyes out for this one.

RandomMess · 10/12/2025 13:36

Excess can also be because they are in pain due to arthritis.

MonkeypuzzleClimber · 10/12/2025 14:20

Oh, I just looked and it does contain poultry fat, but my lovely girl got eczema from a tiny lick of meat, and she was great on these, so it was probably the meat protein that was causing the allergy. She eventually shuffled off at probably around 20. We have since adopted 4 more, one of which also has eczema caused by food allergies. He was on z/d food when we adopted him, but on the we tried introducing small pieces of chicken, lamb and fish one at a time to see what his triggers are. He can happily eat James Wellbeloved chicken, but is allergic to lamb and fish! Like our old girl, he can’t eat any food or treats with lots of processed ingredients/additives (Dreamies, lickylicks ect). The freeze dried fish (or in his case chicken) cubes make good treats for allergic cats.

Came to say the same. Although Ocean Fish is Penelope’s least favourite flavour.

workingtowards · 12/12/2025 14:49

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice. I am trying the thrive ocean fish, which so far his royal highness is deigning to try. Hopefully he will be healing up soon.😊

I don't know, it is very misleading isn't it? Seems like a trading standards thing to me.

The BBC still does a Watchdog section on the One Show, maybe contact them and suggest they look into pet food labelling.

AltitudeCheck · 12/12/2025 18:01

Katkin Oink contains only pork protein, it was very helpful getting our cat with inflammatory bowel issues / stomatitis right again. We've since been able to reintroduce other proteins.

@AltitudeCheckmine all refuse to eat Splash 🙄

Salvadoridory · 13/12/2025 17:56

Why do cats like fish so much? I cant imagine them being very good fishermen in the wild, they are far to impatient and generally dont like getting their paws wet 🤔
