Litter tray hacks!

What litter tray hacks have you found that have made life easier?

We've just got 2 Ragdoll kittens and seem to be going through cat litter in huge amounts - so I’ve been looking at litter genies, stainless steel litter trays etc etc.

what’s worked for you? Bonus points for links!

Clumping litter means you only remove soiled bits and leave the rest

I’ve been using the wood pellets which I really like, although sifting it is a bit of a nightmare and probably why I’ve been using more. Although I’m not sure whether I’m underestimating how much I should be using anyway, we’ve used around 80l in 6 weeks?

I have had a brother and sister from birth. She goes to the toilet outside, after really struggling to learn to use the tray as a little one. He's quite lazy and still uses the tray!
We buy Morrisons Antibacterial clumping litter and it's brilliant! All you need to do is remove the clump of wee! Can I ask what sort of litter scoop you use? I found the general ones a problem. The holes or slots are far too large, meaning that bits of soiled litter drop through and mix with the clean, which means you throw out more than you need to. I use a large scoop, with small holes. It works a treat!

Litter tray liners (i get mine from Asda, think they’re £1.50 for 12) make the trays easier to clean. I just ordered sone large ones from Amazon for our big hooded tray.
Cat litter is from Aldi.

Cats Best
The pee clumps but our boy insists in peeing right in the corner which is an odd shape as his is a massive tray that was an underbed storage with wheels . We took the wheels off but it has 'arches' .......

Our female never buries , and she'll sometimes use her brothers tray in a defiant act "Yes , I know I have my own but I've left a nice big dump in his "

Ours don't like change so for them we keep the Cats Best ( though it is bloody expensive !)

Can I jump on this thread and ask how you manage the smell? How often do you change the litter? What kind of tray do you have… do the carbon fibre hooded ones work? Is bicarbonate helpful?

We’ve had to move the tray to a disused downstairs room by the front door but it’s much more noticeable. We use Catsan litter (2 cats) and I’ve changed the tray to a stainless steel one but within a few days it’s not great. Appreciate any input
or advice

Sainsbury's seems the cheapest by far.you can buy special cabinets to put them in so people can't see the litter tray which looks much better.i out mine in an upside down cardboard box and now she just goes outside.they are too messy and expensive so glad she's moved to outside.

dementedpixie · 26/12/2025 19:50

Catsan is terrible for smells. I used clumping litter when I had a tray and then you can remove pee and poo and not need to change the litter as often

Theunamedcat · 26/12/2025 19:51

Puppy pads if you have a wierd cat my cat pees overboard sometimes but he also digs holes right to the bottom of the tray so his paws get wet sometimes puppy pads dry them off before he walks on my floor

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2025 20:27

I use Intersand classic. It lasts ages and doesn’t smell.

FunkyMonks · 26/12/2025 21:21

We are the same we also have 2 Ragdoll kittens brother and sister 🥰 and my older cat so three they have their own litter trays but two kittens like to use the same on it’s an XL stainless steel one.
I use wood pellets as well but we seem to be getting though it rather quickly.
I also remove the poo as soon as any of them have been.
The litter trays have carbon filters but I’m wondering if there is anything safe I can use to make it smell less, that is safe for cats as I know there are so many oils and so called pet safe stuff that isn’t safe for them.

ah… thank you. Which clumping litter and where from?

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 26/12/2025 21:55

You want a hack tip? I hacked a hole in one of the outside doors and installed a cat flap. He much prefers to go outside, so the litter tray stays clean for weeks on end.

RandomMess · 26/12/2025 22:02

There are a few different brands of litter trays that have a sieve system for wood pellets which are brilliant.

peewee
brit pet
savic
eco haus

Also what you feed them impacts on the other end. Very high meat content means less waste.

Eden 85/15 for dry
Katkin wet

boothandbones · 26/12/2025 22:09

I use clumping for one cat and about 10l every 4 weeks

Theunamedcat · 31/12/2025 09:29

Im currently using Amazon brand corn litter it clumps and isnt bad for keeping smells at bay lasts ages

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/01/2026 20:37

I might try the Amazon corn litter - it'll need to be gradual for my Change Averse Moggies .
This photo though. That's a baking tray not a litter tray !!

One litter tray, two cats. Wooden pellets and I use a minimal amount to be honest - change it every day and a half. It works for us and the cats!! I literally use 3x cupfuls which my friend was shocked at, she fills her tray up to the brim! But our cats are fine with a small sprinkling and use it perfectly!

purser25 · 01/01/2026 21:06

At the cat sanctuary we got ours from they used mainly newspaper with a small sprinkling of cat litter. We use the free newspapers. Ours has spells of not using it especially in the summer then he uses it regularly

I grew up around cats. Due to the sheer size of one of ours, we had to have quite large plastic storage boxes to contain him and the evacuated contents of his bladder/bowel, because otherwise he'd overhang the litter trays of a normal size. We also had clumping litter, so you just scoop out the poo and the wet clumps, rather than the entire thing. Beware that your cats might not appreciate a change in litter, as cats can be very fickle! Oh, and at least one litter tray per cat.

Another family member uses the wood pellet litter, and has a sift-like dustpan to help with scooping out the dirty bits, but saving the clean bits.

Another lines the tray with a double sheet of newspaper, with litter on top. They find it easier and cleaner to pinch the four corners of newspaper together and pop in a bag/bin, before replacing the entire contents of the tray each time.

Hello all,
I have two ragdoll kittens who keep tracking their poop out of the litter tray getting it on their back paws.We use wooden pellets as advised by the breeder but I cannot say I’m overly impressed by it do anyone have any advice please? Thanks so much x

swapsicles · 04/01/2026 10:27

I've got the huge one from pets at home, 75 x 45, it's supposed to be used with a tray inside but my boys just peed over the top and left a puddle underneath so I just fill with litter. There's plenty of room to move about in it and tbh two could use it at the same time easily. Then I just have to lift the lid to clean.
Cheapest litter I've found is in b and m £3.39 for 10 l clumping although availability can vary.

TalulahJP · 04/01/2026 10:35

i put my litter tray on a “baggmuck” shoe storage tray so when she pees over the edge it doesn't end up on my lino! She doesn’t like the lidded trays.

I use cheap clumping litter for a couple of quid from B&M.

Apparently some cats try and eat clumping litter so you need to watch when changing over.

FunkyMonks · 06/01/2026 09:45

@Lozzie82 Hi I have two ragdoll kittens and use wooden pellets sadly I think this is just the breed hence why some do the intimate trim my two have been occasionally stepping in poo or had poo stuck to back legs that I have to wash.
