Cats and constipation

I posted at the weekend about our senior cat who’s been struggling with constipation (it’s not the first time) - he’s arthritic and I think struggles to “go” during a flare up which then causes a back-up, as it were 😬

He already has wet food, milk and lick-e-lix everyday - we’re going to get him some cat soups but is there anything else anyone could recommend? Our vet suggested lactulose so we have some on order - I also read about using hairball paste? Has anyone had any luck?

I find lactose works great with my Siamese. Tip buy the human stuff over the counter from your pharmacy and it’s a lot cheaper!!

Thanks @Mumsworkneverdone - I’ve got it coming from Amazon - no way am I paying vet prices 😂

Yes my old cat has had constipation for years. Lactulose is the only thing that works.

crazycatladie · 04/12/2025 20:57

We used Lactulose. There was something called laxapet which my cat loved the taste of too. We also massaged just above his hips and that definitely helped.

We add extra water to the cat soups and cat yoghurts. I can get away with adding nearly one dessert spoon of water to a yoghurt and stirring vigorously to get every last lump out, and she has one a day. She goes through phases of preferring soups over yoghurts but the soups get less water added otherwise MissFussyPants won't eat them.

I’ve found cat milk quite useful when Penelope has been constipated. I’d be worried about the mess and the sugar content in lactulose. It’s pure sugar!

Toddlerteaplease · 04/12/2025 22:20

The late Cheddar loved moult paste. That’s also supposed to help.

Thanks everyone! We’ve got him on some hairball paste until his lactulose arrives tomorrow and we’ll add some cat soup to the menu as well.

Tuna water always gets my Dcat moving if she’s struggling!

snoopythebeagle · 05/12/2025 08:57

Ooh, we do have some tuna - I’ll add it to his lunch, thank you!

Pumpkin and Full fat milk. ( or esp that cream top milk). My cats all drink milk as they can, however if my one cat is struggling we either give them pumpkin, or if its really bad full fat milk and it gets things going in less than 30 mins.
mine have hairball past and bit of oil in ther food every day to keep things going, but one old boy always suffer.

Wbeezer · 05/12/2025 09:05

One note of caution, any hairball food/ treats I give my fluffy cat cause her to release silent but deadly farts, usually while on my lap in the evening, they are completely vile! Side effect of the extra fibre.

Thanks for the heads up 🙈😂

Edited

He gets full fat milk everyday already but I might add an extra bowl at lunchtime - I’m sure he won’t complain!

About 4ml every 3 nights or so drizzled on her wet food. She doesn’t get the whole dose but is enough to keep her fairly regular. Her poos are so hard! I feel sorry for her pushing them out. In the past the vet has prescribed granules to mix with wet food which absorb water to bulk stools out and tins of chicken mixed with pumpkin. But nothing really worked. She’s had this problem for about 10
years
