Anything I should know about having 2?

So we've just agreed to adopt two kittens/young cats. I've only had one cat at a time before, as that's what the universe brought me, but we're adopting this time and fancied going for two. We have a spacious 4-bed house and our own garden.

They are brothers, very close apparently - one outgoing and energetic, the other quieter and more cuddly. They're 8 months old and already pretty big, I think they are going to be strapping lads. Anything I should know about having 2, other than twice the food bill?!

That it's the best!

And normal for them to fight / play fight.

Now Cat Tax please...

I don't have any pics at the moment - they've taken them down off the site as they were reserved for us and I feel like I don't want to be taking pics until I'm 100% sure they're ours. They're a tuxedo and a 'cow'.

I think they will be more work than previous cats I've had, but I'm looking forward to having a pair that like to hang out together.

We have sibling kittens they are about 14 months old.
They play tig when they are bored or don't want to go out in bad weather!

They are company for each other, used to sleep on top of each other when tiny but prefer their own space a bit more now. They still quite often give each other a wash!

That if even if they are siblings they might hate each other and have as little to do with each other as possible.
I have siblings who do not get on, they are total opposites and live virtually separate lives each interacting with the cat who was already in the house more than they do with each other.

They may not end up being bonded but we've always had kittens in pairs (except for a trio once 🤣) and they always seem to rub along quite happily.
As kittens it is much easier to have two as they amuse each other.

I have two boy cats and it is lovely. They snuggle up together to sleep and it is so sweet to see them washing one another. Lots of adorable play fighting too. You are in for a world of cuteness OP.

My ex cat (who I assisted to birth her babies) had a boy and a girl. Mum hated them once they'd weaned and moved out to the neighbours! We kept the kittens and they'll be two in April. It's the first time we've had two cats and they are no problem at all, (other than having to worry about two now not one, when one is in and the other out!)
They play, they groom each other, they have their own spaces. They are funny and totally different characters.
As a cute aside, they have fresh biscuits and water, morning and night. We also give them a pouch of wet food each time too. We gave them a pouch each at first, but they both kept sharing the same one and the other was going in the bin! So, they share a pouch, but he sits and waits while his sister has her half, then he's in! It seems to work for them, he's such a gentleman! He's also huge like his dad, she's dainty and smaller like mum.
Having more than one is no different really, I'm loving it!

We have two sister kittens, after having singletons previously. It's so much easier! They play with eachother, rampage through the house, wash eachother and sleep snuggled up together. They're far less dependent on us to amuse them.

You need at least two litter trays.

They will steal each other's food. I had to supervise feeding as one started getting thin.

They may want a giant nest to cuddle in or separate beds. I bought both.

Hopefully they have been neutered and recovered by the time you get them.

They can play rough. Sometimes one would hurt the other and there would be a cry and I’d have to clap my hands to break them up.

Echobelly · 30/11/2025 12:27

These two are very close to one another, though not assuming it will always remain the case. We have been warned that one is the food guzzler, so we'll watch out for that. They're not interested in cat beds or trees and like to hang out on furniture (or up curtains, we have also been warned!) - luckily they come with two litter trays, I'm sure they'll be needed.

My last two cats did not want much amusement from humans, so I think it's good these boys have each other - one of them is pretty lively!

It really is the best! I really miss having two.

I had two sisters that I was told were very bonded. They might have been in the rescue, but weren’t actually that close when they settled in. Two trays may not be needed. Every time I tried it, the second was never used.

ExpressiveDecorations · 30/11/2025 17:07

Not just twice the food bill, twice the vet bill and insurance too. Plus more litter, trays etc, more if you use a cattery. But, they are worth it.

Pretty much exactly this. We rehomed a "bonded pair". They cuddled together out of fear and nervousness for the first week we had them, but after settling they mainly try to avoid one another, with the odd fist fight for us to break up.

ExpressiveDecorations · 30/11/2025 17:45

Ours are a not very bonded litter par too, they used to snuggle up together when they were young but fairly quickly evolved into tolerating each other’s presence with the occcasional paw swipe.

stormsandsunshine · 02/12/2025 22:07

We have two sisters who are coming up to 18 months old now. They are very different personalities but are still close friends and spend a lot of time together and still play-fight and groom each other, even if they aren’t constantly snuggling the way they did when they are kittens. Their relationship is very touching and they learn a lot from each other.

Ours prefer to use the same litter tray.

janiejonstone · 02/12/2025 22:26

We got ours a year ago, a mum and boy kitten. The mum was really little, only five months when she'd had seven kittens Shock The first few months they were incredibly cuddly, and she'd pin him down every evening to give him a wash. Now that the kitten is fully grown she's much less accommodating of him and will often growl if he comes near her. I feel ridiculously heartbroken by it! But she's just got her own personality and likes her own space. She's got him very well trained - she always eats first, and he will sit patiently behind her until she's finished.

Echobelly · 06/12/2025 10:12

Just popped in to pay my tax - these two are hilarious chaos so far
