Cat stopped eating wet food

My rescue boy (off the streets for coming up to a year) can be a fussy eater and normally a little change over and he will be fine. However he has literally stopped eating wet food over the last few weeks. He had teeth extracted all went ok and slowly since then he has wound down eating wet food. He went to a cattery last week and I said look hes normally on this but is maybe only eating half a sachet if that, happy for you to swap him if he’s not eating. They gave him about 3 options and he ate a mouthful or so. Since he’s home he still isn’t eating wet food. He does eat dry but I’m worried he’s not getting enough. I don’t know if to give the vets a call or if he’s going through a phase? Anyone else had experience of this.

Definitely needs a vet trip. Could be all sorts of underlying reasons as to why he's lost his appetite.

I'd take to vet for a check over. It's good that he is still eating dry food though. Is he drinking plenty? Peeing and pooing?

My 1 year old cat suddenly went off her food, but she wasn't eating anything at all and barely drinking, and unfortunately died. The vet reckons she ate something poisonous going by her blood results.

Always better to get checked over to be on the safe side.

He’s still going to the toilet for both luckily he uses a tray so I can monitor. He is mostly an indoor cat and hasn’t been out since last Tues where he pretty much trotted round the garden as wasn’t a fan of the weather so don’t think he’s eaten something. he’s still eating dry but I’m just used to him grazing overnight I’m concerned he’s not eating enough vs volume of wet if that makes sense? drinking ok (he loves to drink water and always has so not really had an issue with that) I’ll give them a call tomorrow if they are open and see if I can get him in Monday as dont think it’s an emergency but I didn’t want to feel dramatic ringing them. I think with him having his operation (5th) I just dont know if it’s coincidence or linked. Or if he’s just being off because he’s had a few unsettled weeks vets and then cattery

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but was he possibly previously in a bit of pain with his teeth, and now that’s sorted he’s just pleased to be munching and crunching on dry food and doesn’t need the easier to eat wet? Our boy doesn’t love wet food, although he does eat it if he’s hungry and we do give him it daily, I worried about that (especially as our previous girl cat wolfed any and every food) initially but our vet is happy that he drinks plenty, is a healthy wee lad, and dry is just his preference. I’d also make an appointment to check all is well, just throwing that out there.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses that has been one of my thoughts as well that the extractions (had 3 out) has just changed his preference to food. He’s a pain in the bum anyway with food (genuinely don’t know how he survived 😂) so it is possible now he doesn’t need to eat it he’s not

We’re exactly the same - our boy was a stray kitten who lived outdoors until a kind lady took him in when he was nine months old (he and his sibling had been born in her shed). When he came here he was just past one, and after having a very greedy cat who cleaned her plate at every meal - even when she was days away from being pts with a massive abdominal tumour - it was a shock to see how fussy he was! We circled through all the wet foods to find one he liked, and Cats Protection were very grateful for all the ones he didn’t.

If your cat wasn’t eating at all I would be very, very concerned, but if he’s eating dry, I’d be much less so. Defo get him checked over for peace of mind though.
