Please would you share some cat food brand recommendations? Soon to adopt kittens (not soon enough)

Hi I fed my cat Untamed after a recommendation. It's in small can but only on subscription.
The food is Human grade meat and fish and my x feral, pain in the bum cat loved it.He had loads of health and personality issues, so i thought i had to give him a chance Expensive but worked for me.
We also tried Katkin which is a frozen meat in pouches, but he didn't take to it at all, and this cat would eat anything in great quantities.
The one thing I do believe is buy the best quality you can afford.
Ohhh I love kittens 😻🥰

Thank you
the wait is unbearable 😫

To be honest, start with a basic complete food and see what they tolerate otherwise you will end up with a fuss pot that only eats super expensive food and you will spend £££££ (like me.)

TheAutumnalCrow · 14/11/2025 11:26

Gary Larson / Far Side fan, OP? Good taste there already. The fud is secondary.

Blueuggboots · 14/11/2025 11:41

My cats are raw fed. Some people like it, some don’t. I have two cats and it costs about £40 a month in total.
I buy it from a raw food specialist.

Pixiedust1234 · 14/11/2025 11:46

The best cat food you can buy is the one they will eat. Hopefully you won't spend a lifetime (and fortune) finding out. I'm still on the finding out journey and have tried every item in supermarkets and pet stores *sighs

My words of wisdom are start supermarket cheap as you cannot tell what your finances will look like in ten years but supplement with decent quality biscuits. An only wet food diet can cause dental problems and an only dry food diet can cause kidney issues so a pouch split in half for breakfast/dinner and some biscuits for during the day/supper is best imo.

Also here for the kitten pictures. Squeeeeeeee!!!!

MsGinaLinetti · 14/11/2025 13:07

Ahh thanks everyone
yes, a Larson/ Far side reference 😊
previous cats have been fed with mixed biscuits and wet food- mainstream stuff that you can buy in Sainsbury's, but it seems, like doggy daycare and ducks eschewing bread, our animals expect more from us these days
good point about future finances though.

I feed a good quality dry food, and a reasonable quality grain free wet food. I use the Harringtons wet meaty in the evenings and the Hi Life Tuna recipes for breakfast. Due to Tobias being a fatty & Girlcat being the hairball queen, they get a mix of RC Lightweight & RC hairball (used to be RC Indoor Adult & Hairball).

All cat food in the UK must be of "human grade ingredients" which means products used must pass the same standards as that for human consumption. Though it doesn't relate to what's done to any ingredients after they are processed, just the raw materials used.

Just remember that when they come home you should start out on whatever they have been eating up until now, and give them a little while to settle with you before slowly introducing a different food. Rapid diet changes can cause stomach upsets. Also remember that cats will be cats, and may well prefer cheaper brands while turning their cute little noses up on food you've broken the bank to get them!

Good luck, and remember you have only delayed the Cat Tax. Pictures are mandatory after they come home 😁

Came here to ask about the Larson reference; great taste!

I’ve been using Iam’s multi cat as we have an older cat too; seems good. Also have used Smilla. I forget what we had for them as kittens sorry.

if your calling your cat fud then know thats slang up here in scotland slightly stronger than being called a fanny

I'm glad you said that. 🤣

Whenever threads like this appear, I recommend own brand sachets from Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Lidl because that’s what I give my cat and he doing just fine on them.

I think giving the cheapest food with carby fillers is a bit of a false economy because if possible vet bills.
I did loads of research which I won’t bore you with but mine has ended up with half Scrumbles dry and half ‘meowing heads’ pouches. Stupid name but good stuff.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/11/2025 23:08

I also came here wondering why there was a thread about fannies in the litter tray…

We have a fussy cat and have circled through pretty much every wet food. He wouldn’t touch any of the fancy ass raw stuff which I ended up giving away on the local FB page as we couldn’t fit anything in the freezer. I also gave a massive bag for life of various brands away to Cats Protection where he came from. We settled on Sheba after much trial, with Royal Canin dry. Then weirdly a couple of months ago I found a stray tin of Untamed chicken in gravy (previously rejected) and he wolfed the lot. I bought a few more to see if he would eat those - they now sell it in selected supermarkets as well as subscription - and regretted gifting CP several boxes of it. We’re back on the subscription now. He won’t touch the jelly ones though.

He was a stray kitten born in a shed until a kind lady took him in at about ten months old, presumably living on rodents and spiders - he never wants to go back to eating food he’s not keen on, and makes it known.

Our previous girl ate anything, #cleanplateclub every single meal.

Our fussy creature would not eat one single little ball of Scrumbles - acted like I had poured him a bowl of actual poison. Cats are so funny. (Annoyingly CP wouldn’t take that because it was open, so that was truly money well spent!)

IamChipmunk · 15/11/2025 20:28

@Judystilldreamsofhorses Our kittens came to us on it and we have never changed it!

stormsandsunshine · 16/11/2025 22:41

As others have said, you need to start on whatever they are used to, especially for kittens, where a sudden change can cause upset tummies, so stock up on that to start. If you then want to change it, do so gradually.

Cats can be very fussy and some cats will only eat certain textures, so I would get a small amount of anything to start with, as the best way to guarantee your cat won’t eat a food is to buy a massive bulk saver pack of it.
