Advice on adopted cat please

My DC bought a house with their partner a few months ago and soon started seeing a little cat hanging round- very nervous at first but took treats and then a bit of food. A neighbour told them a previous neighbour had fed it but moved house and kitty was abandoned. To cut a long story short, they have given the little cat a home. Landed on her paws, fed, warm, lots of love and my dc partner who is allergic normally has had no reaction. They took it to vets to check
over, got flea treatment etc and asked if it had been spayed. Vet said didn’t know, looks about 8 and as it had showed no signs at all on the previous 6 months of coming on heat, not to worry too much. Is this good advice? I told them the last thing they needed was a litter of kittens so they needed to check one way or another-but thy seemed to think she’s fine and vet said wait and see. Does this sound right?

I would ask the neighbours if the cat had ever had kittens.

Aww, well done your DC taking the cat on!
Sometimes they can see scars from being spade, may be able to see them or feel them under the fur.

Wait and see is the least intrusive option at the moment, cheapest too. I think they can ask for a blood test to check something related to hormones if they're really worried. If they can afford it and go ahead, I would test for FIV too.

We had a female cat turn up. Vet said the only way to see if she was spayed was if she didn’t have kittens. 16 years later no kittens. No chip. Someone must have spayed her or she biffed all the boys away.

No signs of heat in 6 months does suggest she probably has been spayed. However if the worst comes to the worst & she does come into heat & gets out, the vet can do an abort and neuter operation in one go up until well on in the pregnancy.

And well done your DC and partner!

Thank you everyone-I think wait and see might be ok then. She really is a sweet little thing and she’s quite affectionate too which makes me think she once had a loving home. Poor little thing, left to fend for herself-when they decided to adopt her, she brought in a bird which freaked them out a bit-but understandable that she had to hunt for food. Only thing is, she wakes them
up at night to be let out by tapping on their face-I told them to shut her downstairs where she has her bed and litter tray which she knows how to use but they are too soft!

How cute, tapping their faces! My last boy used to wake me up by gently licking my eyelids..
I recommend a chip cat flap, then they will be able to snooze! Deffo a chip one as keeps unwanted visitors out.
