Giardia ...again...

My senior cat ( 15) had a nasty bout of Giardia in August this year. No idea how she got it - she's mainly a house cat and just goes out into a very small high fenced garden occasionally. She rarely encounters other cats although there are some about in my road.

Anyway, this was the first time I'd come across Giardia, but 5 days on panacur, boiled chicken and gastrointestinal food got her back to normal, while I steam cleaned everything in sight to prevent re-infection.

Here we are nearly 10 weeks later and she's just had another outbreak of it. We're on day 5 of the panacur but it doesn't seem to be as effective this time. Poor cat stil had the nasty yellowy runs yesterday and has gone off her food. I literally have to sit by her on the floor and spoon feed her to get her to eat.

Just wondered what other people's experiences were of Giardia and what lengths you have gone to to prevent reinfection?

My cat had it many years ago and I’m sorry to say he never really recovered. He spent 4 days at the vets whilst they misdiagnosed him with various things, then a course of panacur.
His stools remained loose like diarrhoea and he’d often get caught short and end up soiling the carpet. Hope your cat gets better, it’s a horrible thing to catch!

Thank you. I feared that this was going to be an ongoing issue to manage.
She seemed she was finally back to normal for a day or two with her poo this week, then yesterday another outbreak of diarrhoea.

Giardia definitely showed up in her faecal tests but the vet suggests blood tests to see if anything else is going on, so that's next.
