Toe amputation

Have been told by the vet today that my lovely boy needs a toe amputation. Has anyone had experience of this? I feel so sad for him.

He was holding his paw up on Sunday, by Monday morning it was swollen and pussy, so we went to the vet. They sedated him to clean it up and bandaged it. Went for a bandage change today only to be told that the infection is not looking any better and probably best to amputate. They were willing to clean every couple of days, but it my not work. And since he hates going there, the amputation seems kinder to get it over with.

He is such a prolific hunter, I imagine this might slow him down some. I fear that may sadden him though.

My son’s cat had a toe amputated and is absolutely fine. Unless you looked closely you would never know. The only thing the cat was unhappy about was being kept in until the wound healed.

Should make very little difference, if any at all, losing one toe. I've seen tripods who are fearsome hunters, they adjust very quickly and easily.

Thank you both for your comments. Hearing of tripod hunters makes me feel better.

He is going to be miserable inside until it heals. Currently trying to get him to use his litter tray after 2 years of only going outside.

Our dog had a toe amputated and it didn’t seem to affect him at all from a mobility pov .

Try getting a bit of soil from the garden & adding that to his litter tray, for familiarity?

Thank you, I have tried that and it didn't work. I'm assuming they will empty his bladder when he is under GA for the anesthetic. They can be so stubborn.
