Really want a cat but live with someone who is allergic - any hope?

I understand from Googling that no cat breed is actually hypoallergenic.
I also read some types of food can help, or getting the cat when a kitten, or that some people get used to it...
But she is quite allergic so I'm not sure if there's any way this would actually work.

I'm allergic to dogs, and growing up my parents bought a dog. Before they got him they let me play with him for a while to see if my allergy flared up, which it didn't.

However, as soon as the dog was at home I really suffered. My asthma got very bad until I couldn't actually remember what it felt like to breathe normally. But I didn't let on just how bad it was as I loved that dog.

Since then I have owned pets myself, but I am careful. I had 4 Persian cats who didn't affect me very much at all. I now have two dogs, but if they have poodle in them, they don't affect my asthma at all.

Yes, I met someone with a dog of a known hypoallergenic breed - I didn’t even know a dog was in the room! Whereas normally, I’d get a sore throat and be coughing and sneezing within 20 minutes!

Can I ask how, where you got tested please. GP dosent seem keen to test me, not sure I trust the buy it online kits and private was around £500 for consultation and test.

Thanks.

I was referred by my NHS GP a few years ago to a dermatologist for severe eczema. It’s an indicator of how bad the eczema was that the GP insisted on a referral! The dermo did the tests at the outset before deciding the right medication.

It was good to know I didn’t really have severe food allergies (a lot of people with eczema are told it must be dairy etc).
I did get some useful advice though on avoiding high histamines in food - mainly red wine, matured cheeses etc.

Dh is allergic and we have a Siberian he can pick up and very little reaction to, but he loves cats. If his heart wasn’t in it, we’d not have gotten one, the person with the allergy has to decide.
