Unwanted gifts from DCat

Well here I have it… DCat got the taste for blood and after 2 calm years he’s been roaming around more distances and keeps bringing me “gifts”. Luckily the garden door isn’t open so they don’t make it inside, but I’d still rather him stop murdering.

It started with a small rodent, then a small bird (that was not cool mate) and now a much bigger rodent. Teeth out and everything.

Apparently when they get the rush of adrenaline after their first successful hunt, they keep going for it. Sounds like he’s an addict 😅

Not to drip feed, every type of collar he’s taken off. Once got his jaw stuck in it and so I rather not persist as I don’t want him to injure himself while I’m at work.

I feel like him being an outdoor cat if I suddenly kept him locked in, he’d go berserk and probably stress himself out. Plus he exclusively toilets outside.

Help! He needs therapy!

But all jokes aside, any tips?

Keep him in when its dark, cats tend to have most luck during dawn and dusk (hence the usual zoomie time if they are in the house 😆).

Sadly that doesn't explain the 3am zoomies session!

But to be serious yes, bring him in just before dusk & don't let him out again until after dawn and the kill rate should drop a fair bit.

@Allergictoironing @OSTMusTisNT he brought the last present in at 3pm!!

I feel your pain...I prefer dead things. And yes she has brought live ones in the house and it turns into some sort of comedy.

And the most ridiculous thing is ...it's not my cat. It's just moved in.

https://www.onlycat.com/ I’ve recommended this before because my in laws got theirs a little while ago and absolutely swear by it. It’s the only thing that stopped their hunter waking them up at 3am with “presents” Envy < not envy. We don’t have cats but this definitely has made cat sitting easier for us. Added bonus, amusing videos of kitties with contraband getting stopped Grin

We don’t have a cat flap and have a utility room between the back door and kitchen with a strict “mouth check” policy before admission. It’s not a silver bullet, and me chasing the cat chasing a mouse round the kitchen at midnight was a particular low. The mouse was successfully caught in a pint glass and released! Because the cat needs a slave to act as doorman at home, he’s in if we’re out or in bed, which I think helps - but he does mainly use the litter tray rather than toilet outdoors.

That’s what we do, we don’t have a cat flap as the patio doors are glass so it would be a headache to install. Luckily he’s never brought anything in, but he did tear the one from today apart / maybe eaten so now I’m worried about him getting sick.

This is grim but you might find that something else took whatever it was. Our last cat was a nightmare for killing little mice, tossing them around, then leaving them. I largely refused to deal with them if I was home alone and would wait for DP getting in, and keep her indoors until he did - quite often the mouse (which was 100% dead) would be gone by then. We have a lot of magpies and I assume one of those scooped them up.

Literally me! Refuse to pick dead rodents up so was doing exactly that - waiting for DH.

I wish I could tell myself it was something else, but I’ve not seen another cat / fox in my garden before and there are definitely remains on the ground!

I’m in Australia and we have to keep our cats in 24/7. All of mine have adapted well to an indoor life. With cat trees, toys, regular interactive play and a catio/ cat proof garden everyone is happy. Cat One used to want to roam when he was younger but now he is 11 he has no interest. It was hard stopping him from escaping at first, but it was worth it because he’s still with us.
I know the cat culture in England is quite different but it is possible to have happy inside cats.
It does depend on your cat’s temperament. It took a while to get Cat One happy to be an inside cat (installation of cat proofing) but Cat Three became a homebody straight after neutering. He came to our door as a stray and now prefers to be inside rather than out.

Ah thanks. It’s hard as he’s nearly 7 and was a rescue. He had a long life of being outdoors so it does seem somewhat cruel to keep him indoors now. I don’t want him to get depressed 😂

How old is your cat? All mine who have hunted have done so in their youth then gave up in their dotage. I don’t think there is a way to stop it, I’d just ensure they can’t bring the bodies into the house. Personally I wouldn’t have an indoor cat, especially one that is used to going out. I don’t think it’s fair on the animal but that’s up to you as plenty of people are happy keeping their cats inside.

Exactly how I feel re keeping him indoors now. He’s almost 7. It’s so strange as on one hand he’s not interested in playing, I’ve tried every type of toy available to just tire him out, but will go outside and do all this foolishness haha
