Can anyone give me some advice on what to do when they come home after the op? They are 18 weeks and are my babies. Ive read up but would love first hand experiences. Will they need cones?

They Might be a bit groggy, or they may be completely wired! But they’ll be fine.

Daphnedot · 28/10/2025 10:13

Thank you. Im a new kitty mum and so nervous

Mine got done last week, the vet’s instructions was to let them rest and not be too energetic - well the kitties didn’t get that memo ! They went insane later that day, zoomies, jumps etc though they’ve healed well with no complications. My vet said not to cone as they don’t use stitches in boys, they quickly licked the ‘gunk’ off and left the wounds alone. Good luck, think it’s def harder for us than them 🤣🤣

Mine were completely unbothered by the experience. They just seemed totally normal afterwards. So just play with them, cuddle them, usual stuff. Obviously check their balls area to make sure it's healing but I'm sure they'll be just fine.

Daphnedot · 28/10/2025 10:43

Ill have no problem checking the area after. They do like to stick them in my face 🤣

Oooh! 2 gorgeous tabby and white boys, they are fab. One looks nearly twice the size of the other.

Daphnedot · 28/10/2025 11:11

The smaller one is the feisty one 😂

Hopefully they won't need cones

Often the way to be honest. They are adorable either way, one for cuddles & one for entertainment 😁

TroysMammy · 28/10/2025 16:21

I was told to give them chicken or white fish afterwards. Unfortunately this set a precedent for my now spoilt rotten cat. He also didn't have the "your cat may be groggy and quiet afterwards" memo either.

dementedpixie · 28/10/2025 16:31

My 2 never had cones either

Daphnedot · 28/10/2025 17:03

Thanks all, I'll just be happy to collect them afterwards and bring them home to be pampered. They are very loved babies

Ours didn't come back with cones - the vet said the op for boys is so tiny (a little slit, pop 'em put, snip, press the skin together and done) that it heals really fast and they mostly don't notice the tiny wound.

Arlanymor · 28/10/2025 17:52

I took in a girl cat... and came home with a boy! As others have said, possible initial grogginess and maybe a bit more cuddly than usual (which is not remotely a drawback!) but you'll be surprised how quickly they bounce back. They are gorgeous by the way, I used to have a mackerel tabby - my little stripy tiger.

Iamthemoom · 28/10/2025 21:08

My boys were absolutely fine afterwards, like nothing had happened. It’s more of a big deal for girl kitties.

Daphnedot · 29/10/2025 14:51

They're home, seem a bit wired with one trying to jump in his water bowl.

Oh, they're adorable! 😍

When my boy and girl were done, they didn't have cones - the vet said they'd be more distressed by them, just to keep an eye and keep them quiet...

Well fat chance! They went wild! Flying around the room like a pair of bats, wrestling up and down the furniture... They'd had painkilling injections and I think it made them feel a bit invincible...

Boy Cat was obsessed with Girl Cat's stitches and would try to pat and lick them (I think they looked like spiders to him)... Eventually, after a couple of weeks, she removed them herself overnight, by which time she had healed sufficiently (she's very independent and determined)...

I found they were a little volatile for a few weeks as their hormones adjusted, but such a relief to know we'd have no unwanted kittens!

CuddlesKovinsky · 29/10/2025 15:03

And re water bowls, I'm sure I don't have to tell you to give them plenty of water and wet food, they'll be thirsty after the starving and the anaesthetic...

Daphnedot · 30/10/2025 11:20

They seem ok today, zoomies have turned into being zonked out. Both snuggled on a blanket near the fire. Eating a lot though

Awww, look at all the LIMBS! Gorgeous, they'll be totally fine by tomorrow. What gorgeous little chaps!

No advise just jumping on to say how GORGEOUS!!!!

My tabby and white boy is 12 now but he is the best, he’s such a loving boy and still absolutely full of beans!

Enjoy your lovely boys!

Daphnedot · 01/11/2025 14:07

Thank you for all the advice. I appreciate it, as a first time kitten mum its been like having newborns again, such a responsibility 😂
