Talk to me about adopting 2 cats instead of one

We lost our lovely old boy in the summer and feel like we are gearing up to adopt again. Possibly around/after xmas.

I am keeping an eye on local shelters for cats to adopt and keep seeing bonded pairs. I hadn’t considered getting two and maybe it’s just not practical but I secretly love this idea! Please can you tell me about this if you have two? Do you need double everything - litter trays etc? I’m a bit concerned about space.

We have a garden, quiet neighbourhood, lots of space for cats to lounge inside and out (but no spare bedroom). I have calm older kids who would love to play with a new cat/s. I’m unsure about two litter trays, four food bowls etc and what’s non-negotiable to meet their needs if we did get two. Any tips or advice? Thank you

I don’t understand the benefit of a jumbo cat litter tray. They stink. Small ones stink. Jumbo ones stink. I know because I have one. I am literally there the minute they poo, scooping it up to bin it and put it outside until the bin men come (please don’t put it in the loo).

surely a jumbo one is no better than a small one unless you are happy to let it pile up over days and then deal with it all at once.

The horror!!

You need to sort out their food! I switched my stinky boy to Scrumbles and combined with wood pellet litter, it’s much better!

These cats are just the best. How beautiful they are!

My Maine Coon/Ragdoll will only eat dry! Thankfully he loves noisily and regularly slurping water from his water fountain!

Eta I don’t know how that happened as I was trying to reply to a different post!

I adopted a short hair tortie and white and a long haired one at the same time. They never got on. The DSH hated the other girl and while LH girl was initially curious she eventually returned the hate.

I then somewhat foolishly adopted a half MC/half Ragdoll boy. He’s so easy going and after a few days, he and LH girl fell in love! DC1 hated them both though my boy really wanted to be friends!

DC1 was always really bonded to my daughter so we decided it was best if she moved out with my daughter. She’s happier as an ‘only’ .

These two on the other hand are so bonded and so adorable with each other!

I know I already posted my gorgeous girls, but thought I'd share another. They are littermates and are very strongly bonded. They've also got a lovely bond with me and my husband (he's been in their lives 11 years).
Had some very sad news yesterday and they've not left my side today ❤️

The only thing I'd say is that insurance is expensive as they age and medical treatment becomes more common. Two cats potentially on specialist diets rather than one, two cats needing blood tests etc. If you can afford it that is great but it is important to look to the future too when they aren't just cute kittens cuddling on the sofa...

(I'm speaking here as a woman quoted over two grand for a CT scan! Unfortunately, our old boy died before it was needed but for a while we had to weigh it up)
