Cat proof food waste bin recommendations

A neighbour’s cat is coming in through my cat flap at night and emptying the contents of our food waste bins all over the floor. On Sunday night it pulled a roast chicken carcass out of the bin and ate most of it. Shock Can anyone please recommend a cat proof counter-top food waste bin?

We've used childproof locks on anywhere we want to keep our cat out as otherwise he can open cupboards. Would that work to lock your food bin overnight?

When we first adopted our boy last year he would do this - he’d been a found as a stray kitten before a lady brought him to CP and presumably was used to foraging. Our previous cat had never been interested so it was a shock! We started putting a massive cook book on top of the green waste caddy at bedtime, and he lost interest once he realised he was always going to be fed anyway. (He’s still a bugger for going for anything resting on the sides though.)

In your shoes I’d be more inclined to try and prevent this cat coming in by closing off the cat flap somehow.

Would it not make more sense to stop strange cats accessing your home to begin with? Get a micro chip catflap - they’re not expensive.

Good idea but they currently use a small
dog flap as they’re large breed cats so I don’t think the microchip cat flap would fit in the same place.

Thanks, I will try the book until I can find a more permanent solution.

My daughter's cat was a demon for getting into the rubbish. She bought a Brabantia bin after having it recommended online. I can't see that exact model but the lid was streamlined and impossible for the cat to get open.

You can get microchip dog flaps.

You can get microchip dog flaps.

Now that’s what I needed to know!
