Cat sneezing , should I take to vet ?

Seems ridiculous to ask but y' know, love him lots and know that cats don't show pain /illness much.
His vaccinations are up to date , eating and drinking.
He's a very vocal cat and is doing his usual remarks but with less volume. Shall I monitor or book an appointment today.
Been like this since yesterday.

How does he seem in himself? Lethargic, sleeping more, etc?

Could he have one of his own hairs up his nose, or a grass seed, or has he sniffed at that bit of dust/pollen hidden behind the TV or headboard?

If he seems fine in himself then adopt the wait and see approach but if he appears listless or huge amount of gunk starts appearing around the eyes or nostrils then take him in.

My cats have had the odd cold over the years, usually sneezing and moving as if achey, but this disappears after a week. They've just needed tlc (warmed up food) and extra warmth (same as me if I have a cold).

I’d keep an eye on him for 48 hours or so and see how he is. That’s my general rule for any sickness in my animals and 99% of the time they’re absolutely fine.

Do you have pet insurance? Mine has a helpline where you speak to a vet nurse for advice which is useful for things like this.

One of mine does sneeze regularly. The vet does not give it much importance if the cat can smell and is eating well.
Then it turned into mucus from both nostrils. He had antibiotics and several tests. They cannot find what is wrong with him. But he is doing well now. Still sneezing sometimes.
If there is a change in the voice, then it could be a cold. Keep warm, spoil a bit, keep an eye and definitively take to vet if mucus appears or he is not himself.

Oh thank you all.
That's so helpful.
Keeping an eye.
Have put heated throw that he's lying on to nos 1.

@MushMonster We have an 18 year old cat who often sneezes with mucus etc,

it turns out we have a Cat who is so shit at being a cat it's unreal, he has hay fever - we and the vets made the connection when we realised these mucousy sneezes always tie in with DH or the neighbours cutting the grass and him enjoying lying under peoples trees in their gardens.

MushMonster · 07/10/2025 17:00

@QforCucumber thanks for sharing.
He had a nose mucus sample and came back positive for a rare bacteria, that only causes problems for cats with low immune system. Then bloods, which came back with nothing unusual. The vet is obsessed with the cat having cat flu, but the tests come back negative.
Anyway, I gave up and he has kind of overcome it on his own. He sneezes, but no mucus, so no bacteria infection again. We do know he has a shite immune system because he almost died as a kitten, needs antihistamines at times...
So, yeah, a sickly cat! Who could think of it! They are supposed to have seven lives!

I’d also watch and wait. Our previous cat used to sneeze a lot. The vet said she just had a sensitive nose. Our boy only sneezes if he’s given catnip, and he always looks so surprised that it happens it’s worth the catnip craziness. (Reminds me of the dear departed family cocker spaniel who would sometimes fart loudly and then look around in bewilderment at where the nouse came from.)
