13 year old cat always hungry

Over the last month my 13 year old cat always seems hungry and spends all day meowing for food.

he is fed 3 times a day, a mixture of wet food and kibble, He has been on the same food for years and until recently grazed on the food throughout the day, but now he gulps the wet food down but still seems hungry and keeps following us around meowing.

He is up to date with his worming and flea treatment.

I’m a bit worried that he could have diabetes (after consulting Dr Google!)

Has anyone had an elderly cat with similar symptoms??

He needs to be tested for hyperthyroidism. Very common in old cats

I agree it sounds like hyperthyroidism.
one of my cats had this, I think she was 13 too. It is very treatable but you must get him to the vet asap.

okay.. thanks for your replies.
We have made a vets appointment for tomorrow.
Can anyone give me a rough monthly cost of the medication he would need to take if he does have hyperthyroidism?

I don't remember the meds being expensive. My cat was on meds for about one month to stabilise the condition, and then the vet did surgery to remove part of her thyroid, and she needed no more meds after that. Again, the surgery was not expensive, it was day case.

I pay roughly £100 every 3 months for hyperthyroid meds but the blood tests for it are pretty pricey and we have them done annuallsy

My kitty had hyperthyroidism when he was old and took carbimazole tablets, one daily, for the remainder of his life (I think a couple of years after diagnosis). That controlled it successfully so he didn't need surgery. Wasn't too expensive but it's about a decade ago so I can't recall. He did have insurance though so that covered the costs.
