How to get a second cat?

I have a 3.5 neutered male cat. I’ve had him since he was a kitten. He is unfortunately not a lap cat and a bit grumpy! He is mostly indoor, but he does like to chill in the back garden in nice weather.

I really want another cat, but I think I would be best with a kitten (female possibly?) so existing cat knows he’s the boss and won’t be dominated by an older cat.

But it’s so hard to adopt because I live on a main road. We have a high fence and my cat has never tried to jump it. But rescues say I can’t have a young cat because of my location. They said possibly a cat over 5. I can’t have a disabled indoor cat either as they are usually only allowed to go to households as the sole cat.

So unless I move, I can’t have another cat?

Due to hybrid Working there is usually always someone home, cat doesn’t even get left for more than 6 hours on the odd occasion. Cats would get plenty of love, attention, food and care, but it’s so frustrating!

I don’t want to buy one from a breeder as I don’t find it ethical, but wondered if anyone has any advice on an alternative?

Cat proof the garden

Honestly it's so hard to stop them exploring, especially rescue cats if they've lived outside.

I know a couple who lost their last cat to the road and they got a Ragdoll, they are easier to keep indoors apparently? They certainly seem to be very chill and don't shoot out like ninjas like mine do !

That’s another reason i would want a kitten over a cat who is used to roaming.

There is no guarantee that that kitten would want to stay inside the garden. As you live near a main road, your sensible options are indoor cat, catio or to cat-proof your garden.
