What happened to my cat? Tw-dead cat.

We found one of our cats dead in the garden yesterday. She was a fit, healthy 4 year old. She was lying on the lawn, no marks on her-no sign of injury. I’ve seen poisoned animals-pretty sure she wasn’t poisoned. We live well away from the road-so it’s unlikely she was hit and managed to get home. She was a wanderer so was often away for a couple of days. Any ideas? I’m worried that I might have missed something and her brother might be at risk somehow. I’ve never lost a young animal before-our pets have always died of old age….

I’m so sorry for your loss. Out of three cats I’ve had; two have had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is very hard to detect and often doesn’t get diagnosed even though around 30% of cats have it. If left untreated then cats can drop dead of sudden cardiac death. Maybe it’s that.

So very sorry to hear this OP. How distressing for you all. Happened to one of ours many years ago. Neighbour rang to say he was laid in her garden. No known health issues so I’d agree - likely some silent congenital condition. RIP kitty.

Oh and I’m sorry to say that it was my two brother cats who had it. So if your girl has a genetic brother then get him tested for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; it’s really heritable.

Get pet insurance first because the treatment is a lifetime of blood thinners and potentially blood pressure meds. It can be a three figure sum per month. Plus a £600 monitoring check per year.

Heart most likely, very similar to my best friend's cat who had the same aged only 7 - he actually had him autopsied. He was assured that it would have been something he had been born with, and nothing to do with his care.

I’m sorry to hear about your cat x

I am so sorry Flowers

I also think it was her heart - we lost our 7yo cat suddenly two years from what we think was heart failure. She was fit and healthy one day and dead 12 hours later. It was horrendous but in a way I'm glad she went quickly and peacefully.

Gosh-thank you. I’ll check his insurance and get him seen. We’re still in shock- she was such a lovely quirky cat. The only explanation we could find for her mysterious behaviour that she was a Russian spy. She was one of a litter of 6 born to a rescued Spanish street cat- I hope the rescue can get in touch with the others.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Of course you’ll be devastated by your companion not being with you anymore but for what it’s worth; she likely would have just felt sleepy, passed out and just never woken up. She knew she was loved and she didn’t experience pain as she died.
