My cat meows every minute that she is awake. It’s driving me insane

My cat is 10 years old. We have two cats, one is normal and the other one is extremely chatty. I don’t know how to get her to shut up. She isn’t ill, she isn’t hungry, she just does it all day unless she is curled up on someone’s lap or asleep. I think if I stroked her all day this might help but I am trying to work.
it’s really loud too.
How can I make it stop?!?!?

Ours is the same. All I can offer is sympathy. If his eyes are open he’s yelling about something. He drives me round the bend.

C0NFUSEDIAM · 01/10/2025 11:35

God, how do you not kill him?

She has been going all morning. I am working in my bedroom with the door shut because I can’t stand the howling. My desk is in the open plan part of the house

Thankfully he sleeps a lot, most of the day he is unconscious! To be fair he is quiet if he’s sitting on a knee. Then he concentrates on random biting. He’s lucky he’s beautiful.

Have you mentioned this to your vet? We had siblings kittens from the same litter. Many years later when one died, the other took to following my mum round the house meowing constantly.
The vet put her on cat ant- depressants which helped a lot.

Get her some interactive toys

I have 2 adult rescue cats and 2 years ago I got 2 kittens. One of the kittens meowed so much that my two rescues ( who I had had for 6 years by this point " copied him. So now I have several cats who just meow all the time 😅😭😭😭

If any of us open any single packet they all come running and yowling / meowing around us. I'll never forgive the kitten for it 🤣🤣 ( light hearted I love him )

He’s not a ragdoll is he? Mine is and she is truly beautiful but extremely annoying

I did wonder about this and had a good look online, any suggestions? Ones I have got before they seem to get bored of easily. They are allowed out but only seem to go out to pee or when I’m there to follow me around meowing

Cat tax please

Is it new behaviour or has she always been like this? I’ve got a howler as well, she is only silent when asleep, on my lap, or generally (thankfully) when I am asleep. It’s tricky when I’m trying to work.

She’s not bright enough to lead me to what she wants so I offer her food, catnip, a couple of treats, a play with the laser. If none of that works I go to my bedroom, she follows me and I ‘settle’ her on the bed with a 5 minute cuddle. She usually stays there after that.

Same, always been this way. Mine is a Birman, some are more prone to it. He's not stressed or depressed, just loves the sound of his own voice. He's a house cat with an outside catio which he can access via a cat flap and even the neighbours have mentioned how noisy he is!

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 01/10/2025 15:38

Maybe everyone is going too fast around her and she needs some reassurance or time. My cat is 20 and is a lot more vocal and demanding now. He still insists on doing things that he shouldn't be doing though, like going up on very high walls or roofs when he has arthritis and then yowls everyone out of it to be helped down!

Mine may be largely a Birman judging by his looks

@Chemenger He’s lovely. Has he got socks? Birmans should always have socks. It’s the way I can tell the difference between ragdolls and Birmans. That and their noses.

This is my quiet mouse BSH who I never hear a peep from.

Is the cat Bengal? When I ring my DS on the phone his Bengal cat is meowing all of the time. It's like the cat is trying to join in the conversation.

Chickenhorse · 01/10/2025 20:09

Catnip spray from Tesco. I spray some on my Dcats bed when he is being particularly vocal and goes all goofy and purrs and kneads his bed quietly.

mathanxiety · 01/10/2025 21:39

How about buying one of those speech button pads so he can learn to tell you what's on his mind?

Curiousrobin · 01/10/2025 21:41

Another noisy Ragdoll here! We recently lost his half brother, and although he seems happy, he seems a lot more vocal than before. Driving us round the bend. Especially when our toddler is asleep.

Boxingshibes · 01/10/2025 21:45

Both of ours meep. They do sleep during the day but if they see us they will meet at each other and us. If we answer they meet again it's so cute. Dd is annoyed as they don't meep back at her.
Cat rax

Indoor cat?

Thundertoast · 01/10/2025 22:11

Hope its okay if I join - i am new to cat servitude, having taken on my partners cat after a lifetime of dogs and zero cat exposure, and im besotted with her.
I have been absolutely delighted to discover she is noisy, and she does this thing where she will ANNOUNCE she has arrived back in the house by meowing loudly like she's hurt, causing me to rush to her to check she's okay (always is, she looks at me like im insane)
However, I hadnt really thought through the fact that cats wont shut up until they get what they want... you can tell a dog to be quiet, but if she wants something... its happening. NOW. NOW. NOW ME-NOW.
And about once a week it seems that what she wants is to have me come out of the bedroom so she can check she still holds ultimate power over me, then bugger off back to knocking things over on windowsills.
She has of course manipulated me into thinking this isnt even slightly annoying by deciding I am the Favourite Slave and preferring to cuddle up on me very sweetly 80% of the time over DP, who she's had serving her 10 years.

His back feet have white toes. In this picture he’s soaking wet because he’s too dim to notice when it’s raining until it penetrates to his skin. Then he has to tell us very loudly that he’s wet.

I hasten to add that he has his own towel for these situations.
