Good Quality Cat Food

Icequeen01 · 19/09/2025 07:53

My 3 cats are now seniors with two being 13 and one 16. I seem to be throwing a lot of cat food away at the moment so I’ve been trying out different foods with them. They love Untamed but bearing in mind I would use 6 tins a day, plus one cat loves his Royal Canin dried food down all the time so he can graze, this is just too expensive to give them all the time.

Can I ask what you feed your cats? Mine usually eat Goumet Perle or any of the other various Gourmet varieties, Purina, Felix As Good as It Gets and absolutely love Encore occasionally (really as a treat as it’s not a complete food). They don’t like beef or lamb flavours. I do use Zooplus with a repeat prescription to keep the cost down a bit.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I feed my cats Luna and Me raw food. 100% real meat, organs and ground bones. Far more natural than the highly processed stuff and much less stinky. My cats love it.

Hopefulbride18 · 19/09/2025 18:25

My cats are obsessed with Applaws.. not sure how it compares price wise to untamed though!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/09/2025 22:33

Charlie is having Scrumbles wet food. I can’t afford the likes of Untamed or Applaws but this seems to be good quality for a reasonable price.

Timemyluckchanged · 22/09/2025 22:46

Ours has 2 cans of untamed daily plus Iams dry food down to pick at. It’s worth the money he’s much happier with the better food and always cleans his bowl now. I was wasting so much food when he was on Whiskas, there’s no waste now.

Funnily enough I tried my cats on Scrumbles this week but annoyingly they just licked the jelly off.

I do agree but when you have 3 cats, that’s six tins a day at £8 per day = £56 per week, plus the Royal Canin dried food one of them likes to graze on. Sadly that’s just too expensive for me.

We give Canagans to our two, wet food and dry kibble. It’s 75% meat. When we got our second and the cost doubled it was a bit eye-watering, but we figured what’s the point in having pets unless you adore them.

bunnygrav3 · 23/09/2025 00:35

Mine love wild freedom from zooplus. It's very high meat content and costs more like £50 a month

Blueuggboots · 23/09/2025 00:38

I feed my 2 raw food from a local raw pet food shop. Costs loads less than subscriptions. About £38/month for 2 cats.

ilovesooty · 23/09/2025 00:52

My two have Hills Dental dried food in the morning, and Untamed / Gourmet at teatime.

MarketSt · 23/09/2025 22:20

Mine are mega fussy with wet food. Which I don’t like as in my mind kibble isn’t good at all. But neither is throwing away as much wet food as we end up doing.

We feed them Acana dry as they’ll eat it and seems to be decent quality from my research.

Heronatemygoldfish · 26/09/2025 15:56

I've a freezer full of Marro. Ginger nutter loves it but also likes McDonald's aka Felix. So he gets Felix at the main morning/evening feeds with the moggies and Marro when he asks during the day (and he has free access to Purina One kibble). He still looks skinny - he's a Maine Coon and usually by his age they're about 8.5kg... he's 6kg, but I have a feeling that it's because he's an incredibly active outdoor cat. Tracker says he's walked 5.5km in the last 24h, which is another reason for getting him good quality food.

IJWMM · 28/09/2025 02:08

Mine are on Applaws. Dry food down all the time for grazing (because it’s complete). And a small tin of wet each per evening (chicken in broth) as a treat because it’s not complete.

TBH, what I dish up from the tins would suffice for me in a zombie apocalypse! It looks fairly edible in an emergency 😹

Their poos all look fine and don’t smell on this regime, so we’re all happy in this household.

StarCourt · 28/09/2025 03:13

mine have Scrumbles but the gravy not jelly

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/09/2025 09:40

I tried Charlie on some of the new Scrumbles pouches as I find the tins awkward to open. He loved them, but unfortunately the litter tray was a bit smelly afterwards so it's back to the tins and it turns out the pouches are different recipes. He likes the jelly and pate but I haven't tried him on the broth as it's a lot more expensive

I've been on a mission to find a good but affordable option and have landed on thrive dry food and animonda vom feinsten from zooplus.

I had no idea Zooplus had so many different brands!

Mine is on katkin. I have found that they recommend the 250kcal portion a day, but i buy the 400kcal packs and give half a day. Which only works our around £35 a month i think. He has dry food down all day.

Ruggerlass · 29/09/2025 19:26

I don’t mean to be flippant, but as a vet told me, the best quality cat food is the one your cat will eat. Mine gets a pouch of Felix as good as it looks for breakfast and Purina One chicken dry. Please don’t throw the unwanted food away, instead donate it to an animal shelter if possible

Mine told me the same with Harry! I had a row with a rescue in a FB group as they were shaming people who weren’t feeding their cat food that they deemed suitable. According to them anyone feeding Whiskers etc was condemning their cat to a short life full of ill health. It made me so angry!

WonderfulSmith · 29/09/2025 20:16

I get food from Zooplus. Food made to German standards is better quality than uk food.

God that’s shocking. I’d be telling them to Foxtrot Oscar! I do think there seems to be some weird kind of snobbery around cat food. My cat may eat what some consider rubbish food but he’s healthy, not overweight and enjoying life.

raspberrytart · 29/09/2025 21:32

Katkin and regular mice and birds.the twat.

I really struggled to stay polite. Funnily enough they didn’t answer me when I asked them how generations of cats lived to a ripe old age on Whiskas! They didn’t seem to appreciate people’s circumstances change and feeding what they consider substandard food is better than giving up the cats!

As you can tell I’m still really annoyed by it!

That’s just a typical response when people know they’ve no answers and their argument is a mute one. All cat food must
meet nutritional standards. Easier said than done but try and not let it get to you. I’d
be led by my vet rather than some internet randoms.
