Claw clippers

Despite being an outdoor cat most of the day, and having a scratching post that he uses daily, himself has very fast growing claws and I need to clip them. I have seen it done many times in rl and on line, and know to only clip a tiny bit off, and he is quite a calm cat. Local pet shop only had dog clippers, local vets doesn’t sell them, Amazon has too many choices and since I always read the negative reviews I was overwhelmed. Does anyone have any recommendations so I can be prepared to face Amazon again? Thanks in advance.

I normally ask vet to do them, but a) he isn’t due a trip for a while and b) usually dirty protests his travelling box so want to avoid that fun outing if I can.

We do it with human nail clippers and it's fine. As you rightly said, the trick is only to cut off a little bit

Same with me using decent quality human nail clipper, when I used to have to do Boycat's claws regularly. Some cat's claws just grow faster than others, and not all cats are equally good at doing their own pedicures.

By the way, they don't scratch to keep the claws from growing too long, they scratch things to sharpen them (ouch).

Interesting responses! Didn’t know that about scratching posts, certainly working, they are like knives!

We use human nail clippers too. Most pet clippers cut through the thickness from top to bottom which is more difficult and makes me wince let alone the cat. With human clippers you can turn the to clip sideways so the cut is through the thin plane. I find that gives more visibility of the nerve too.
