Getting antibiotics into a stubborn cat!

Anyone have any tips? Squeezing directly in isn’t an option as it stresses him out so much he starts excessively drooling. He’s sniffing food to within an inch of his life with suspicion!

Has anyone had any luck with a particular food / treat that masks the smell? Thanks!

Liquid or tablet? We used to squeeze mouth open and pop tablet in. Took 2 of us with a feisty cat. Ours always noticed it in cat food but hiding in a piece of chicken might work.

It’s liquid. We’ve tried this but it’s casing him so much stress he’s drooling a lot after (he's not allergic) … looks like I’m trying some super smelly food!

Mix it into a Lick e lix treat.

ScoobyG · 06/09/2025 07:36

Mix it into a one of those lickilick things. Maybe two depending on how many ml it is needed to disguise.

Mix it into a Lick e lix treat.

That's what we do. Accurate first thing, before he's had breakfast. Then breakfast immediately after it.

If nothing works you could go back to the vet and ask for a course of injections, it would be more expense though and depends how stressed he gets going to the vet.

Chemenger · 06/09/2025 07:44

My top choice would also be to go back and get an injection.

Or you could smear it on his paw, he may be more worried about having a sticky paw than the taste? I have crushed tablets in cream and put them on paws quite successfully in the past. Depends how much there is.

You could try warming tuna or sardines in the microwave to make it really smelly and mix the stuff in. Warm fish tempts cats to eat in my experience.

Thank all! Smelly fish and treats on the shopping list today, just want to make sure he’s taking it!

Saying that I’ve just seen him chase a neighbours cat up the road which is a huge change since Thursday night already!

One of our cats is 11 and I always struggled to get tablets into her. She would only have spot on treatments for worms and slow release anti inflammatories etc. Anyway a new vet recently prescribed her 3 weeks of steroids for allergies. I was so stressed thinking how would I get them into her. Anyway I bought those tubes of creamy treats and broke the tablet into a small bit. She’s taking them no bother. Result!
Got them in maxi zoo but most of the supermarkets have them now.

Yes I do this and use a syringe and shoot to the back of the mouth at the side.

TroysMammy · 06/09/2025 09:20

Years ago I had a cat who would take antibiotics out of my hand until he started getting better then I had to kneel on the floor and pin him between my legs so he could finish the course. He was exceptional and I've never had the same success with subsequent cats although they were compliant to a point.

Chemenger · 06/09/2025 09:51

I had one cat that was impossible to pill. The vet offered to demonstrate and after a 10 minute struggle decided that the long lasting injection was a better idea. He was small but very, very determined.
