Possibly new kittens tomorrow - years since we’ve done this - wobble!

Yes, yes, if it works out I’ll pay the tax 😂

Back when DH and I were young and beautiful (haha) we adopted a pair of kittens when we moved in together. DCat1 sadly passed away young due to health issues, DCat2 went on a big adventure earlier this year and passed away sadly at 10. It was horrible news but I was so grateful to the people on the other side of town who bothered to take him to the vet so he could be identified.

Since DCat2 passed we have always said we will take the plunge when the opportunity presented itself. DH has a friend of a friend who has some beautiful kittens needing a home which we heard about earlier this week. So we’re off to see them tomorrow…

I had a lovely naivety when we did it a decade ago! We just bought the bits and cracked on. Now… argh! Having a sudden wobble. I’m just very aware it’s a big commitment. No reason not to be confident, they’re from a trusted source, we have all the gear, we’ve done this before…

But this time it’s in a bigger house not a flat, far more areas to kitten proof. And oh yeah, we have DC (human ones) age 3 and 5 so it’s a more chaotic house. They love cats and are very used to them as they had DCat2 all their lives and all the family have cats. But kittens? Eek.

We’ve thought this through, we’re not being impulsive, can afford all the food and vaccinations and neutering and chipping and insurance and DCat2 lived here very happily for years, including when the children were much smaller. I’m suddenly worrying though!

Please can someone reassure me this isn’t a terrible idea?! I feel like I’ve suddenly realised I’m having another baby tomorrow 😂

This is a wonderful idea! Your kittens will love the house and the kids and you will all love them. It will be intense for the first few weeks but by Christmas you’ll be wondering how you ever survived without them!

do pay the tax when they’re home!

Ah thank you! I’m just wondering why I’m jumping into more intensity when I have young kids/one needing potty training/ill parents/stressful job etc. It’s actually probably quite good timing though as DC1 is starting school atm and there will be someone at home 24/7 until at least after Xmas.

I think it’s just like second babies - it’s all a bit overwhelming as I know the work required! Easy first time around when you just see a cute face and don’t know the chaos that will come with! Plus the kids are coming with us tomorrow so I feel like we’ve sort of committed - obviously if we have any concerns about the home (unlikely as it’s a friend of a friend) we will pull out, and we know what we’re looking for, but telling the kids committed us somewhat!

I think I’d forgotten the stress a kitten brings! But we’ve survived. We’ve loved every bit of it. I also has a wobble many times before having him. But it just works itself out.

We’ve had him 8 weeks. Could not imagine him not being here.

Oh this stresses me out and cheers me in equal measure! I’m just relying on the cuteness outweighing the stress which from the distance of a decade I remember it doing!)

Plus side is this house doesn’t have any curtains - will save me the £££ the day I came home from work to find these munchkins had destroyed ours. Here’s our old boys from back then. Can’t believe it was 10y ago 🙈

We have 2 older cats and took on a very young stray kitten (also have 2 DC) and it’s been the best thing ever. She was completely feral and had never lived indoors, so we were a tad worried. She honestly couldn’t be more loving, and we’ve only had her 4 weeks. Yes, returning to the litter tray has been a faff, but its only temporary and we couldn’t be happier.

They will bring such enrichment to your home. Good luck!

How did it go OP?

Well, I guess it’s tax time !!

I still think it feels a bit mad to go back to the kitten stage but they’re adorable and I am in love. Black kitty is a boy and B&W is a girl. They’re the sweetest.

Tbf the 3yo human has been more stress than the kittens today!

They’re gorgeous, OP.

Is the friend of a friend going to get the mum spayed as soon as the kittens are all weaned?

It’s brilliant that these two have found a good home but spaying is so important for loads of reasons - both for cat welfare and because rescues are overflowing.

Cheepcheepcheep · 30/08/2025 22:15

Oh agree entirely @EmpressaurusKitty.

Our girl is getting done asap (as is the boy), cute as they are, there are more than enough kittens in the world.

Friend of friend is a ‘let them have one litter’ view - not my preference but they’re all v looked after and loved even if we disagree on that.

They are gorgeous. We had our boy done at 16 weeks so that might be best option at first.
