I dont know what to do since mine was a kitten he has peed on furniture .So i cover my arm chair at night and a got a sofa you could wipe down.

I have had to kick him out my daughters room as he peed on her sofa

and although he seemed ok with the sofa for a while he has started peeing on it

he has now peed on play clothes in a toy box

he is so very loved and has multiple litter boxes across the house

i don't know what's causing it at the vet he's healthy ,it just seems like a behaviour he has had since kittenhood

all i can do is lock him in the kitchen/downstairs bathroom at night. As he only pees on stuff at night .I feel terrible for doing this though but its the only thing that stops him peeing

Have you had him checked by a vet? Also it may be behavioural in response to some perceived threat or anxiety. Feliway plug ins can work to calm some cats down.

LoveMyLifeAlways · 21/08/2025 16:07

Has he been checked for a urine infection?

Bitzee · 21/08/2025 16:12

Has he had a vet check?
Does he go out in the day but is kept in at night? That can be a common cause.
Any stresses in the household?

rosydreams · 21/08/2025 16:19

as i said at the vet healthy ,hes been checked before this is just something he has always done. I was hoping getting rid of the old sofa change to a wipe clean one would break the habit but it has not

he is indoor he has never gone outside ,i am getting a catio built next year. We had a baby in December but he has done this way longer .It just seems like a behaviour thats ingrained that i cant seem to break ,he is 2 years old now

Once they start peeing on something you need to use a special pet urine cleaning spray to remove any trace of the smell - if there is the slightest hint they will keep using it so just wiping clean isn't enough. Amazon sell a few different types Simple Solution Extreme is the one we used which worked ok.

Laiste · 21/08/2025 18:44

I wouldnt feel terrible for keeping him in the downstairs bathroom at night, with his litter tray, to be honest. Give him a fluffy bed in there (maybe on top of the loo seat as cats like to be up off the floor) or put a roomy pet carrier that he can come and go from in there with a fluffy blanket inside to keep warm. Small dish of water and dry food - he'll be fine.

If it's that or have my sofa pissed on every night ... no contest!

Bitzee · 21/08/2025 18:49

He might be happier going outside and roaming, and then he’d toilet in a flowerbed. Or is he a pure breed that can’t?

But also absolutely what @Puppylucky says re the specialist enzyme cleaner.

RandomMess · 21/08/2025 19:04

We have one like this. He isn’t allowed in much tbh which saddens us. Have tried anti anxiety meds too.

rosydreams · 21/08/2025 19:38

someone's ginger recently went missing in our town. Pretty cats get taken ,our cat cheddar is absolutely gorges and friendly. He would get catnapped

yeah i have the enzyme cleaners and use it when he ever pees on my daughters sofa or ours .Our kitchen is connected to our bathroom so we shut the door leading to those two rooms. He has food water trays .If he stays in there we have no issues but i just feel so guilty .We have some pet beds and my other half suggested we put a cat cave for him to hide in there

Agree on the enzyme cleaner, then get Feliway plug ins close the areas he pees.

Wexone · 21/08/2025 21:21

is he neutered ? cats also pee to mark their territory..if not get him neutered

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 22/08/2025 08:32

Let him out. His behaviour is screaming stress.

Wexone · 22/08/2025 13:22

Also agree let him out aswell after getting neutered, you can get tracking devices on amazon which are great peace of mind, i have a cat flap too that is chipped so he can go in and out when needs too,

Why would you feel guilty?
Its a warm dry and safe room for him to spend the night. Much better than letting him out at night - that's when cats get into fights/end up in neighbors houses being gradually stollen fed/run over/nicked.

It is what it is. He's a sofa pee'er, therefore he had to also be a bathroom sleeper 🤷‍♂️

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/08/2025 14:54

No advice on the weeing, but our cat is shut in the kitchen overnight as he's otherwise a total pest as soon as the sun rises! He's got a cat tree and a bed, his food (if he's not eaten it all by bedtime) and water, litter tray, plus a wicker basket of his toys. He's absolutely fine! Our previous cat was also shut in the kitchen at bed, and was also absolutely fine. Both this boy and our previous girl did/do go out, but we do keep them in overnight.

Some days we go through to find he's been having a mouse party with stuffed toys strewn all over the place (one morning I almost killed myself falling over a ball - thankfully its jingly bell alerted me to it) but usually you hear him hop down from the cat tree as you open the door so he's either sleeping in that or looking out the window.

Wolfiefan · 22/08/2025 16:07

Is he neutered?

rosydreams · 22/08/2025 17:09

yes hes neutered sorry forgot to mention he has done this since we first got him so its not stress he just prefers peeing on the sofa to his litter trays. Yeah there is plenty of room in the kitchen with his bed and he can go to the bathroom were his litter tray is.

I feel bad because he would much rather be cuddled at night but as soon as my other half wakes in the morning before me he lets him out. Then i am woken to a loudly purring alarm clock

my other half did make a good point if we did let him out he would end up peeing on peoples garden sofas,we would get in so much shizzz

Have you tried different types of cat litter? Some prefer clumping clay litter, wood pellets, corn based, etc. I would also make sure litter is unscented, litter trays are cleaned asap after he has used, litter trays don’t have lids or doors that trap the smells inside. Litter needs to be the correct depth, I think around 3cm is usually stated. Definitely also recommend feliway plug in, but purchase online rather than vets or pet shop as much cheaper. I sympathise - the constant cleaning is tiresome. Hopefully you find something that works.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 22/08/2025 17:51

The fact that he's always done it doesn't mean he's not stressed - cats are supposed to be out roaming and exploring their territory, not shut up inside four walls for their entire lives.

OSTMusTisNT · 22/08/2025 21:20

Does he have a favourite cat bed or blanket etc? If he's peeing in the same spot on the sofa, cover it with his blanket as cats generally won't piss in their own bed.

Failing that, some cats just can't be left alone with soft furnishings and he'll have to stay in the kitchen at night but make it a nice cosy safe place for him.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 22/08/2025 21:27

I have the same issue and have for years. Pedigree house cat. Been to the vets and not a uti.

I sprinkle the capsules in his food the vet recommended, feliway, enzyme cleaners, built him a catio he has free access to day and night. Still does it. Wees on the sofa, on my bed and on me when I’m in bed! And the dog bed.

tin foil on the end of the sofa he wees on helps. It’s now known as cat piss corner in our house and the foil is never moved.

dog no longer has a bed, tried a few different ones and all got weed on. So she’s on the other sofa now.

bedroom door shut as much as possible and mattress protection and a waterproof duvet cover on the duvet.

interestingly I can’t smell cat wee at all. Dh has to tell me if the duvet has been pissed on.

Puppylucky · 23/08/2025 21:02

Have you had his kidneys checked @YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt ? Our boy with CKD eventually ended up peeing everywhere but his pee was so diluted that it didn't smell.

I think it’s my nose, dh can smell it fine. I struggle to smell much.

cat had his kidneys checked a couple of years ago, he’s only 6yo and has been weeing on and off for a couple of years. Goes a while without doing it and then it revs up again. Seems to tie in with anyone in the house going away for a bit (there’s always someone at home, he’s not put in a cattery or left). When they return home that’s when it happens.
