Think I jinked my cat

I responded to a post yesterday about insurance rising each year
I said one of mine has had no injurys etc so no claims to date.

Well my day didn't go as planned tidy up, make phone calls and relax.

This morning cat was let out in back garden by partner before he left for work with window left open.

When I got up at 9am I assumed she was in the garden so got their food ready. I saw said cat looking in kitchen window ( at front of house) looking bit frantic and I heard a noise that shes never made.

Let her in she was frantic and making like lound howling/ crying sounds, realised she had hurt her leg.

No injury that i could see but was limping but then trying to get out back door.

Half weight baring on right leg which looked like she wasn't bending it when walking.

Called Vet who said it doesnt sound like shes got a break and could only fit me in this evening.

Kept her in all day where she eventuarly settled down in her bed
she slept or never moved all afternoon but was in pain if tried to sit up.

Woried all day and was hot as had to keep windows closed all day just in case she tried to get out.
Called Vet asked if any cancellations but didnt have any.

Vets at 5.40pm
She went mental in the carrier but wasn't too bad once in waiting room.

He advised that no obvious injury but on examining her ( and it was several times pulling / prodding/ pushing) she howled when he really pressed / pulled a bit harder but also went quiet smetimes so he wasn't sure if she was masking it. Breathing was rapid

She then layed in corner on floor after he tried to see her walking,
her breathing was really bad by then.

He said he was very worried about her breathing but I advised it wasn't like that before she got there.
So he said strees and pain probable cause.

He said could keep her in to sedate and scan there and then as R/ knee area may have a torn ligament ( think he said that) or to try antiflamtry/ pain relief for 48hrs which i went with for now.

Had a injection there and i am to follow-up tommorow night with tablets untill friday.

From 7pm till 10pm she hid behind sofa and slept. She's eatern a bit of food and treats and has only moved a bit with a little cry so I put her on the sofa near me and she has not moved once but has eatern a bit more next to me and sleeping lots.
Breathing has been back to normal once home.

I am hoping its a slight sprain and will heal, but i have a follow up appt on Friday, if no better then he will sedate and scan.( if gets worse in mean time go back sooner)

Thought few days may be too short a time for a sprain to heal ( if it is),
But he said meds will work fast by Friday ?

So poorly cat (feel so so sorry for her) and paid out £116. ( will start a claim from insurance once follow up visit and descion any more
treatment is required as my excess is £125 so yodays cost is just under at mo.

Think I will keep my mouth shut in future !

Sod’s Law! I swear they know the best time to cause trouble. Hope cat is ok. I would be cautious about claiming for a relatively small amount at the moment. As it will affect your premium next year. You can always backdate the claim if it gets bigger.

Yes sods law and I will back date once we know outcome on friday as sedation and scan etc will be just under £1000 so will add today's cost.
Funny as cost of insurance going up each year was what i was responding to yesterday.

I'm a little unimpressed by your vet diagnosing over the phone & not having her in early - there are many reasons why cats may get a leg injury and some of them (e.g. hit by a car) can cause other less obvious injuries like internal bruising and bleeding.

How is she dong this morning?

Oh, and you forgot to pay the Cat Tax?

Oxo01 · 20/08/2025 10:40

@Allergictoironing
Thanks for asking
Not sure if it was a vet or receptionist but yes i wasn't impressed either.

I think I may have said she is kind of weight bearing a bit. But my fault for not asking and pushing i suppose.

Vet at appt did say about possible road traffic injury etc

She slept / stayed on settee all night, and was still there this morning so was a bit concerned as she would usuarly come up stairs to find me.

I put her on the floor gently, she walked on all fours, ate all her food and then to my surprise used the litter tray i put out yesterday so i was happy as she hadn't toileted since yesterday and it was the first time shes ever used a tray, she had only seen one when my other cat was ill and had to use one.

She then started scratching and meowing at the back door to go out but I have not let her out as I need to see her walking a bit more, also vet said keep her in for few days.
I did touch her leg a bit when at the door but she was angry not getting out so not sure if any pain.

I opened the door slightly to let orher cat Kiki out and Ginge bolted so fast to the door but i was on alert and stopped her so shes sulking behind the settee now.

She's strong willed so im hoping that leg is healing rather than her trying to bolt even if in pain.

Oh shes just come out and sat in her bed on floor washing her leg / self.
Cat Tax paid x 3

Ooh she's gorgeous! I love a well marked calico.

Don't forget she's had pain relief so it won't be hurting anywhere near as much as it was, so you were right to keep her in. Even if yesterday her reaction was partly down to the shock & immediacy of the injury, she still needs to rest it a bit to heal.

Oxo01 · 20/08/2025 12:12

@Allergictoironing
i took her in off streets 4 or so years ago, shes got up few minutes ago walkin to the door wanting to go out. I will give meds tonight and keep an eye on her.
Thinking I should keep her in untill after friday morning appt but shes not happy lol sitting on my lap now.

Update
She's been kept in and sleeping lots but so much better since last night.

So mid morning today i let her out in back garden, she laid about for a few minutes but then jumped over the fence but came back after 10mins walking and eating fine.

Only thing not sure if to take her for follow up appt tomorrow or cancel and keep giving her antiflamatry meds and if any concerns in next few days rebook appt next week.

My older cat did something similar a few years ago - we think she jumped off the flat roof (single storey extension) & landed awkwardly. She ruptured a ligament in her knee, had to have £2k of orthopaedic surgery, which was worrying as she has a heart murmur, but she recovered well & insurance covered it all (minus excess).
She is now 15 years old & pretty sprightly - but my insurance premiums have doubled Confused

Oxo01 · 21/08/2025 15:35

@AwkwardPaws27
That's what they said it could be with mine who is about 4 or 5 years old maybe (I rescued her so exact details not known)

I did think she sprained it jumping off fence or something.

The vet has just called me ( beat me calling them ) as she in for check up tomorrow and possible scan if no better.

But I told them she appears to be back to normal and I let her out today but wasn't sure if its the antiflamtry / pain meds enabling her to walk as should.

She said keep on meds till Sunday then by Tuesday/ weds if still an injury it will show as she will start limping again. So im happy with that and fingers crossed it was / is a sprain.

Thankfully she hasn't a heart murmer like yours but my other one who is 10 has with thyroid issues and I've been avoiding any sedations as much as I can for now.
Glad to hear your came through it.

I'm gearing up to call petplan as I want to ask why this ones policy up a few months ago as shes had no claims at all. ( I've not claimed for this injury so its not that)

I've been reading other posts on here and im wandering if the prices are higher according to where you live as I've seen many people say they pay less for cats 2 or more yrs older and some with higher cover.

I've gone through all my renewals for last 6 years and all 3 went up over £120 a year, 2 had no claims at all.

The one with tyroid its going up by £150 but I understand shes has regular meds etc.
I will see what they say.

My cat had a very noticeable limp / weak leg with the painkillers (as the knee was unstable so kind of buckled under any weight?) so fingers crossed yours is just a sprain!

I think it does vary by area - I remember an old colleague saying hers went up when they moved area (only a few miles & her cats were indoor only!).

Oxo01 · 21/08/2025 16:30

Well just spoke to petplan
I used my 4 yr old with no claims to date as example and asked why am I paying same as 6 yr old and 12k cover. ( i have 7k)
She then said if boys they are more cost. i informed her mine are both females ! Said she will feedback to team but they cant change it.
So.if anyone has good cover / cost can you give me a idea where you live, im in london so to be expected I suppose.
