Why is DCat no longer using the litter tray?

We have a rescue cat that previously lived outside its whole life (he is 8). He has lived with us for a year, is a mostly indoor cat (understandably!), and has used a litter tray with no issues until recently. We went away for a week in June, during which time it was reported he had stopped using the litter tray (he wasn't alone in the house; my grown-up kids were here) and was pooping on the floor. Since our return, about 5 weeks ago, he still has not resumed using the tray and poops upstairs on the landing carpet in the same place - every day.

We have been spraying the carpet with orange scented spray, and the enzyme cleaner. The litter tray itself is scrupulously clean with fresh litter. I have carried him to it a few times to remind him of it! We just don't understand why he is no longer using it and can't be persuaded back. Was it because I went away? - (but I am back now!). Does anyone have tips on what else we could try? Thanks in advance!

He needs to see a vet to make sure there’s nothing physical going on.

I would also stop using any scented sprays and just wash the area with biological cleaner followed by the enzyme spray afterwards.

I would also wonder whether your kids kept on top of cleaning the litter trays properly or whether they were left to get in a bit of a state, as it’s very common for cats not to want to use dirty trays.

I'd buy a new tray and try that.

Sorry, final thought - I’d also make sure his routines were stuck to while you were away and that he never found himself locked somewhere or missing meals.

And get some feliway plug in.

I have a stressed boy and he does tend to have toilet issues if anyone goes on holiday. DH has just been away for a week and even though I've been here looking after dcat he is shitting on my bed!
