Cat litter smell

Can someone please recommend a cat litter that doesn’t smell horrendous please? I’ve tried 3 different ones and the smell is still very strong with all 3 ( I clean it regularly) I know people will say their cats don’t smell 😬 but I’ve tried 3 now and the smell is so strong

How many cats do you have? How many trays? I use Ever clean litter free paws and Multicat for my 2, I have 4 trays. 2 in 2 different locations. The ones they tend to use most are the ones I use the Multicat in. The others where tracking is more of an issue I use litterfree paws. I use stainless steel trays rather than plastic.

I was updating my comment when you replied sorry! I really do love Ever clean. It's more pricey but my cats have become far more stinky with age. They're now 13 and 12, I used to use Catsan but it wasn't as effective and tracking was a real issue despite keeping the area swept and mopped and hoovering the whole house daily I'm hoping someone will come on here with the holy grail!

Cleaning- How regularly is regularly? And how old are the kittens as they aren’t meant to have clumping litter when small.

Ours were on wood pellets when little, poos removed asap and litter changed completely every 2-3 days. Minimal smell but with little ones that can’t go out some smell is always likely.

fastingworks · 30/07/2025 01:36

This makes such a difference. It’s not dusty & doesn’t smell.Well worth a try!

This. Kittens can try to eat clumping litter, which of course is A Bad Thing.

Also sex and age - if you have any boys, and they're getting to puberty age (anything really from about 4 months) and especially if not yet neutered, the pee can smell pretty strong.

I use wood litter for my indoor adult cats. Downside is tracking (everywhere), but it covers the odour better than many and it's comparatively cheap too. Scooping whenever I notice, change completely when it does start to smell.

The best litters are clumping ones which unfortunately kittens shouldn’t really be using. We used wood pellets but due to the size some cats won’t use them.

Now they’re all adults we just use Amazon corn based clumping litter - it’s cheap and doesn’t smell and one 10l bag does our three cats for about 2-3 weeks.

Twatalert · 30/07/2025 09:25

I use everclean too. The clumping unscented one. There was zero smell when I had one cat. I have two now and it does smell after a while. It's not strong and I wasn't sure at first what the source is or if they have changed the litter. It's not a stench. More like a musty smell. Im still figuring out how often to change the litter completely. Not so much of an issue now with windows open etc but will be in winter.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/07/2025 09:54

We use Catsan. One cat and three trays, but really he only uses one, and sometimes toilets outside. Poo is removed immediately, and tray “dug over” straight after a wee (assuming someone is at home), whole thing changed and the tray deep cleaned once a week. We get through a 10l bag a week, he’s a digger and likes it deep!

fastingworks · 30/07/2025 12:09

Agree, stainless steel litter tray helps.Easier to clean & doesn’t soak up the smells.
I need to keep the litter tray up high as our dogs like to eat out of it🤢

Takis · 30/07/2025 16:38

They are all females, the urine smell is just horrific, hits me as soon as I walk in the room. Oldest 6 months old and 2 are 15 weeks old. Changed twice a week roughly, poo removed instantly.

I think I’d change it more often if it smells that bad.
also wash the outside of the tray and under it. I didjt but my cat peed over the top of the tray and the floor was smelling and I hadn’t noticed. Fine now it’s cleaned though. I use the cheap clumping litter from B&M and it’s great.

Soontobe60 · 30/07/2025 18:40

If the smell is that bad you’re not changing it enough. Also if it’s not deep enough they could be spraying on the actual tray sides which will linger.

You need to scoop the wet litter out after every single wee.

FancyCatSlave · 30/07/2025 20:35

It isn’t deep enough or cleaned often enough. At that age we were changing every 48 hours so 3-4 times a week.

Now they mostly go outside we change every 1-2 weeks, once a week in winter when it is wet weather, every 2 weeks in summer when it is dry and warm as they are rarely in.

But when they were tiny we used at least 80 litres a month. Cost a fortune.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/07/2025 21:56

Yes - we pretty much use a full 10l bag of Catsan in the main tray each changeover, deep litter, large tray. Obviously poo smells before being removed but no smell of wee. (I’m mega short sighted but have a bloodhound’s nose as compensation for that!)

Takis · 04/08/2025 16:25

Thanks all I changed to Catsan and wow all I can say is what a difference! So far so good, no nasty smells anymore.
