Tell me your litter tray hacks / best litter?

We just got a kitten and have bought a covered, stainless steel litter tray and am using the clumping litter that he used before we got him (Cat’s Best).

I am cleaning the litter / the outside of the litter tray / etc several times a day! It stinks whenever he poops, and there is litter tracked everywhere. I’m a neat/freak and the mess and smell really bothers me. The litter is in a downstairs bathroom which is now a no-go area, even though I’m constantly cleaning it all up.

Help! What are your hacks? How are those litter robots? What litter should I use?

I used amazon corn based it still tracks but it doesn't stink i have mats with holes in it outside the tray and hoover daily

Consider the food if its still stinking

We use Catsan, and per pp have a foamy holey mat thing under the cat’s preferred litter tray. Our cat tends to make a right racket digging in the tray, then come and tell us he’s used it, so it’s dealt with immediately, and then the floor swept. He usually poos once a day, but sometimes goes in the garden so some days only wees in the tray (usually twice or three times).

Immediately after a poo it’s a bit stinky, but only for five minutes or so. What’s your kitten eating? When we adopted this boy he was on Whiskas and his toilet was very unpleasant!

I’ve switched him to Lily’s kitten food from another that I hadn’t heard of before. The change might be making him a bit stinky!

Good idea on the track mats, I’ll look up those.

Are the litter robots any good?

You absolutely need everclean cat litter, helps the smell and doesnt track so much. I contemplated a litter robot but due to the cost tried everclean and now dont feel I need the litter robot.

I also use a sifting litter tray - got it from pets at home, its a tray with a sieve tray on top of it. I use a stainless steel tray but use the sifting tray every day - just tip into that, sieve into the plastic tray then tip it back into the stainless steel tray.

With everclean its expensive for a box but it lasts a long time as you dont need to keep changing it, you just top it up.

We have a litter tray with a lid which helps. Catsan litter and then scoop out solids and it lasts a couple of says.

We use the tidy cat breeze lidded system, unscented. At this point, the pee pads at bottom are generic non scented charcoal ones. The non clumping litter is either breeze brand or generic pellets. Cat pees in one system and poops in the other. Poops dry out quickly and no smell or tracking. Sometimes she kicks pellets out, but they’re easily picked up. Best system for us. We get it from Amazon.

Have you just got the one tray? If so try having two. Cats are very strange creatures and often prefer a tray for each function. It means poop tray is easy to clean.

Yes - we have three trays for one cat. He generally uses the same one but if we’re out and he poos in that one he will use a different one for a wee.

I have a top opening litter tray. It has a lid, with a hole in it. The litter tracks a little bit, but it stops all the kicked out litter.

I use disposable litter trays (my cat mainly toilets out of doors) because he digs his way right through to the bottom of the tray and I really couldn't stomach scraping cat poo off the litter tray any more.

Nothingbutstress · 07/07/2025 13:01

Be careful with litter robot trays as I’ve seen stories of cats being injured/killed in the mechanism.

I was just about to post a new thread on this but will join this if that’s ok? We have two 7 month old rescue kittens who are just starting to go outside. They’ve been using an ordinary very large litter tray up to now with Catsan litter. We’re hoping they’ll start going in the garden now during the day but as we’re going to keep them in at night, we want to find something covered which avoids the kicking out of litter as much as possible and keeps the smell down, as it will probably be in our living room. We were wondering about one of those cat trees with the litter box at the bottom as they love to be up high. Any advice for two cats? They don’t seem to have any issue using the same tray at the moment - they never have accidents or kick poo out - it’s just the litter.
