Cat rehoming, best option?

Bear with me, this is last resort. Basically we have two lovely indoor cats who are about 3yrs. One had an accident over a year ago and had FHO, hasn’t ever fully recovered, when taken to vets the same thing is said “will heal, they’re fine, they’re leg will be better than ever” my concern is after a whole year he’s still limping. We have three flights of stairs and the stairs are not doing him any favour, he has become lazy as such not wanting to play and flinch when anyone including the other over active cat goes near them. It’s almost like his injury is hindering him! Me and dh both work full time and have two young children and can probably not give him the care he requires to improve his leg. This is an ongoing thought we’ve had for ages now. There was a point where this cat wasnt urinating properly but vet said this was down to the operation as appose to any bladder infection or kidney disease. The cat in question is very unkept, he won’t groom himself, the other cat does it for him and we obviously brush him and look after his health otherwise

This won't be what you want to hear but it sounds like they are a bonded pair - it would be cruel to separate them. If you have to rehome I think you should rehome them together.

If the leg is causing the cat pain after all this time then surely it’s better to have the leg removed? If he doesn’t want to play, move or groom himself as a young 3 year old cat then he must be in great discomfort? The pain will remain wherever he lives.

^ this. The issue isnt the home, its that the cat is in pain. I'd want a second opinion from another vet, ideally an orthopaedic specialist.

I think you need a second opinion from a specialist vet.

Would it not be better to have the leg amputated at this point? Cats manage absolutely fine with three.

Amputate the leg. Cats manage really well as a tripod!

I'd seek a second opinion too, your cat shouldn't still be in pain after so long.
If the second opinion says the same I'd look at getting the leg amputated.

Rehomeing a cat which already has health issues means the poor thing will get overlooked an awful lot .
