This morning, my tiny, skinny, 14+ year old girl (adopted so age unsure, but at least 14), caught an actual magpie!

This is the cat who, when 5 years younger, I once watched fail to catch an already dead mouse!

It was this morning and I'm still a bit in shock!

Fortunately I managed to pry her mouth open and it flew away, seemingly unharmed! Neither of our cats (other one is 13) have caught anything for years so really thought we were past this!

Its the natural tabby in her - shes reminding you that shes still got it.

That's the thing - we've had her about 8 years and I'm not sure she ever "had it" lol...

Cats became interested in us round about the time that Hunter-Gatherers were moving to places like Cyprus (never mind the Egyptians, we were giving up space on our Neolithic animal skins and sharing space in our burials 10,000 years ago) and had clearly fully taken over the sofa long, long before the Johnny-Come-Latelys that were the Ancient Egyptians with their agricultural society.

You'll notice that the phrase Hunter-Gatherer includes the word 'Gatherer'.

Gathering includes, for example, picking up concussed avians who have flown into the window on a sunny day - and presenting them as Tribute.

She is of her people and is telling you that the blood of her ancestors runs through her veins - any suggestion that she might have merely scavenged a casualty of your double glazing would be met with righteous indignance.

My cat caught a bird the other day. I’ve had him 2 years and he’s not caught so much as a spider and fails to catch flies
I had an operation and he brought me a bloody bird!

Aww your cat knew you were 'injured ' so he brought you some dinner because you couldn't catch/cook your own .

Our elderly cat adopts the shape and physical activity levels of a potato during the winter and then becomes quite sprightly in hot weather, it’s like the heat from the sun gives him energy. The hotter it is, the more he runs around like a kitten and becomes very skinny (we’ve taken him to the vet, there’s nothing wrong with him, he’s just very active in the summer and burning a lot of calories. He gets positively fat when it’s cold).

A few years ago, during one of his summertime activity frenzies, he brought in a live seagull. It was enormous and he had somehow managed to get it through the cat flap. It was very angry and flapping around our house, and he was leaping feet into the air to try and recapture it.

Maybe she’s like our cat and has absorbed energy from the sun during the heat wave, like a hairy solar panel?

A SEAGULL?

you win, they're enormous!

One of mine caught a blackbird once. Well fairer to say he had his mouth open and the blackbird flew into it. It was actually my fault, the blackbirds and their two babies were in next doors garden being harassed by a pair of magpies , I happened to be watering some pots so put the hose on shower mode and sprayed towards the magpies to shoo them off. Unfortunately I caught one of the adult blackbirds by mistake and in panic it flew towards my open back door where the cat was lounging and minding his own business…..

It was very traumatic, for all of us. Therapy, mealworms and gin for everyone was needed. Luckily the cat was so surprised he offered no resistance when I took the blackbird off him and let it go.
