Does this sound reasonable for pet insurance?

16 week old moggy kitten. He’s neutered and will eventually be allowed outside. No pre-existing medical conditions. The adoption charity recommended Agria. So I went on their website and have been quoted £27.96 per month for vet bills of up to £20k per annum on a lifetime cover policy. To include common health issues, ‘find cat costs’ if he goes missing, behavioural support, 24/7 vet advice and 12 months access to a pet reunite service. Excess is £170 plus 10%.

I haven’t had a pet before so new to this. My sister-in-law pays £70 for her pedigree dog but I have no idea what people normally pay for cats. I’d rather pay a bit more to have extra cover should the worst happens but don’t want to get ripped off.

I pay £14 for both my moggies but it only covers £4k costs. Realistically is your cat going to occur more than £4k worth if vet procedures at such a young age. I will get the more expensive insurance when my cats turn 8 when they are more likely to need vet attention. It really is personal preference, some people have no insurance some have expensive insurance but I do believe most people have something in the middle.

That seems a lot, but it's good vet fees cover (one of ours racks up £2-£3k bills regularly enough that I am very glad we have good insurance). I'd go for the highest vet fee cover I could afford, definitely, having had to make very difficult decisions based at least partly on finances.

We use Animal Friends who do excellent, affordable cover so it might be worth seeing how much they would be before committing.

Young cat going outside so is at risk of RTA which could require over £10k worth of treatment yes the policy sounds reasonable.

Soontobe60 · 18/06/2025 07:07

That’s a ridiculous price! I’ve just paid £175 for 2 cats for a year. Previously, I paid around £25 per month for both cats through Tesco insurance.
Go on Moneysavingexpert for a price comparison search.

I use Petplan for mine. No co-payment until they turn 10, lifetime cover, £100 excess (per condition though -- is yours per year?). Our cats are on a £4k a year policy and dogs on £12k, from memory.

Year after year, Petplan just cough up for the sicklier cat.

MaybeItWasMe · 18/06/2025 07:18

That’s a lot. Great vet fee cover though. Go for it if you can afford it. My young cats are insured for about £8pcm each and have £5k of cover - Animal Friends.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/06/2025 09:51

Try Tesco, they have always been cheapest for me. And are very quick and efficient to deal with.

Thanks for all the replies. I’ve heard good things about Petplan and Tesco so good to see them mentioned on here as well. Plenty to think about. I can stretch to £27 per month but thinking of getting a second cat in the future, so two lots of £27 per month would be very expensive!

First hand experience with Petplan has been amazing.

And don't understand vet costs. £6k it cost to help my moggy kitten, with four night stay and three emergency surgeries. And that was as an inside kitten.

Picklechicken · 18/06/2025 22:23

Well we pay £40 a month for our 6 year old cat with Petplan for £12k cover (he’s never needed any treatment so far, so no existing conditions). I think the level of cover you’ve been quoted for is really good. I would just check with whatever vets you want to use that they can claim via that insurer if you want them to claim directly - we went with petplan mainly because our vets will claim directly from them meaning we’d only ever need to find the £60 consultation fee. I wouldn’t want to have to whack it all on a credit card etc and then try to claim it back. So that’s a big pull for us.

TroysMammy · 21/06/2025 08:09

I pay around £29 per month for Haribo (who is 6 today) with Petplan. He is covered for £7k mainly because his predecessor Troy who died aged 5 of heart failure was only covered for £4k and it was nearly up to the limit when he died.

I haven't had any problem with Petplan in the event of a claim. My excess is £90 so I decide whether to claim based on the cost of the vet treatment.

Wow that’s a lot. Thanks for your reply, it’s made me convinced I need to go for one that covers a high amount. He will probably end up being an outdoor cat as well so all the more reason for going for a higher one.

Hi OP. That’s a very cheap quote for a 16-year-old kitty with Agria. I pay that EACH for my three 9-year-olds with Agria and for a much lower cover. I had a couple of 16-year-olds a few years ago, with Agria, and they were over £50 each. What I will say is, while other companies might appear cheaper, they’re not always a good choice as even simple procedures these days can run to thousands. I have been with both Petplan and Agria and they have been excellent when I’ve needed them.

GuppytheCat · 21/06/2025 18:52

He's 16 weeks, Alltheothercats, rather than years.

AllTheOtherCats · 21/06/2025 21:24

Ah sorry. I’m blaming the heat. I’m all over the place today! But I can thoroughly recommend Agria anyway. They’re very good 😊

GuppytheCat · 21/06/2025 23:38

I'm pretty much stuck with our current Petplan lifetime policies, given how many pre-existing conditions we'd now have to declare to anyone else...

lovemycbf · 21/06/2025 23:43

Personally I prefer petplan with lifetime cover as my lovely old lady had a lifelong condition and they paid out all of her 13 years for many different things.
And the vet said they have a great reputation for paying claims
