Cat has recurring diarrhea every few months

I have obviously taken him to the vets. Done a stool sample previously, found nothing. Test for tritrichomonas, found small about of this in sample but medication is hard to come by at the min and apparently this tends not to effect cats after age 2. Every time I take him to the vets they give me steroids.
This time is the worst it has been, there is a small amount of blood, I was told not to worry about this. He is getting poo all over himself and the carpet.
Im honestly so unsure what to do next, any advice welcome.

My cat has had bouts of this even after we put her on the hairball diet (she can only tolerate 50/50 still but it's soooo much better. However we have started noticing a pattern and she seems to gets diarrhoea quite badly if she's been hunting frogs. I suspect she's reacting to their "slime". Does yours hunt frogs/toads?

Edit - she has been seen by the vet lots of times, had xray and bloods etc, but they don't really know either.

Try GI food. that worked for ours. We get Purina off Amazon

Tobias has the runs, used to be soft poo that went to slurry-softness and now constant. In fact it was while doing tests for this we found out he was FIV, but that isn't the primary cause.

In the end we got in a specialist vet sonographer who travels to the vet practice & got an ultrasound done. Turns out he has inflamed and thickened walls to his lower bowel region, most likely because of his probably unconventional diet when a stray exacerbated by his FIV. Not a terribly cheap procedure, but was covered by my insurance.

Recommended things to try were a hydrolysed diet or novel protein diets - not really feasible for me to do as the 2 cats share everything and diet trials aren't really that easy with 2 cats who are both grazers!

Things weren't helped by him having very low B12 blood counts which is one of those vicious circle things where low B12 leads to the runs, which means they pass out B12 quicker and the levels get lower etc etc. There's a product called Cobalaplex that's a B12 veterinary supplement which you can get from your vet, or somewhere like Pets at Home, Zooplus or (in my case) Amazon. Brought Tobias's B12 levels up a treat and now he's on a "maintenance" amount twice a week.

In my case, there's no blood and apart from the horrors of his litter tray leavings no impact on us - he's fit, healthy, gorgeous coat, just a bit on the chubby side ('cause he's a bit of a piglet). Apparently there are more intrusive tests & a possible operation, but any operations other than life saving are contra indicated for cats with FIV.

if she gets outside either something leaves milk out 'for the cats' or she finds herself a little furry snack that doesn't agree with her.

He doesnt go out roaming, he only in garden with me/catio so I know he's not eating anything he shouldn't. I currently feed him katkin with hills dry food for digestion. I dont believe its food related and he went months being fine, or just one day then back to normal.

I feel so awful that I can't seem to do anything for him.

For our boy with IBD / stomatitis, we had good results with switching to the pork Katkin (it is a single protein source) for a while to allow his gut to settle and heal. We gave been able to reintroduce other flavours now (supermarket cat food is a no-no though, guts and mouth both react badly). He also had B12 injections to top him up after a particularly bad episode of diarrhoea.

The IBD has settled, the stomatitis is ongoing and has eventually meant he's needed a full dental extraction (so he's a gummy little old man now!). He has occasional steroid injections if he seems to be starting a flare up.

Have seen several poster here recommend hairball formula dry food to help with diarrhoea, may be worth a try.

Edited

I will add some of the pork one to my next order. See how he goes.

The vets recommend the hills for digestion which is why he has this one. Maybe I can try a mixture of both
