Litter Training

Hello I've recently adopted 3 kittens, I've had cats and other animals my whole life so I'm by no means new to it. They are 10 1/2 weeks old now. I dont ever remember having issues with litter training but this time its proving to be quite difficult, finding puddles of wee in corners etc. I have bought orange car fresheners around places they've shown favour to, bought orange smelling floor cleaner and linen sprays etc. I would definitely be interested in any advice or hacks that have worked for you in the past!

How many litter trays do you have and what kind of litter are you using? I wouldn’t mess around with scented sprays as many are toxic to cats.

Are you using the same litter and type of trays that the rescue used? It is very unusual for kittens ready to be adopted to not be litter trained.

You need to use an enzyme cleaner specifically for cat wee to clean up, eg Simple Solution.

Is it the same litter they're used to though? Are the trays too big/high-sided for easy access?

They say you should have one tray per cat and an extra one... (not that most people really have space for that many!) How often are you emptying them? Are they using the trays as well as having accidents? Or not using the tray at all?

Cats often wee when they're stressed - so if they use the trays and are just going elsewhere as well, you might want to try feliway or similar to help calm them. And consider getting an extra tray for a while.
And as others have said, get an enzyme cleaner - we use urine off - otherwise they just associate those spots with toilets and will keep on going there.

If they aren't using the trays at all, you need to be watching them like hawks and picking them up and taking them to the tray every time they show signs of needing to toilet (miawing, scratching at the floor etc).

Not enough litter trays - you need four if you have that many cats, and you need to use the same litter they came to you using.
